Meet Cathy Kanitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Kanitz.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always loved music. My parents had music playing regularly and really encouraged all their children to take piano or instrument lessons. I started piano lessons when I was 6 years old. I learned to love it early on. As the years went on, I continued taking piano lessons and added saxophone, flute, and oboe lessons as well. I also started singing in choirs around the age of 12. I just couldn’t get enough of music! I continued my music education and focused on piano the most although still loved singing a lot. I began giving music lessons 30 years ago both from my home studio and in a number of private grade schools. I continued teaching at a private high school for 10 years, offering both individual piano and vocal lessons. Now, my private home studio is how I educate students from age 6 – 70! I still have a deep love for music and enjoy helping others on their own personal musical journey!

Please tell us about your art.
I teach music because it connects with the deepest part of each student. Music stirs our souls, calms us, helps us express emotions, and more! Each student is an individual who learns at his/her own level, feels and expresses music differently from others, brings their own personality and experiences to their music, and grows at his/her own pace. I spend time understanding each student’s personality and learning style so that each student walks away with the best possible learning experience and the greatest musical success.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I see success with my students on a weekly basis. Success is when a student has mastered a difficult piece, when someone accomplishes changes to their vocal technique and can feel and hear the difference, when a student “feels” his/her music and really understands the emotional connection to it. At Excellence in Music Studios, we celebrate little and big accomplishments. Each student reaches his/her own personal level of success. There’s no comparing – only celebrating when a new level of musicianship has been attained. Each person’s success level is personal and I love helping each and every student reach new goals and recognize when they’ve personally succeeded!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best way to see the results of my teaching is to enroll in lessons! I offer both piano lessons and vocal coaching to students ages 6 and up. You are never too old to learn! I currently I have just as many adult students as children. A few of my older students are retired individuals who have always wanted to learn to play piano and are now enjoying the results of their dedication, hard work, and love of music.
I also have a number of students who participate in theater groups around the valley and others who regularly help lead worship at churches in the Phoenix metro area.
