Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassy Saba Shovak.
Cassy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the age of 13, I turned my hobby of making beaded jewelry for friends and family into a business. It really took off when I was in high school and started to get into semi-precious stones and crystals. I did trunk shows and sold my pieces to local stores. I continued advancing my business throughout college then moved to NYC right after I graduated. I now work in the diamond district in NYC and sell wholesale gemstone and diamond jewelry as well as costume jewelry. I am a jewelry designer for E! News and other celebrities. I travel for trunk shows and work with private clientele and sell online. I am born and raised in Chandler so travel to Phoenix about five times a year to have trunk shows and visit clients for special needs. Always interested in meeting new clients and helping them get the best quality for the best price.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Many obstacles now living in NYC the grind gets tiring but I do love it here. My husband is a jeweler too so we share similar positive and negative experiences. The jewelry business is competitive and oversaturated so differentiating yourself is challenging but so important. I did consulting for Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry for 5 years while running my own business so that time-consuming balancing everything. I helped with marketing, sales and production. Since it was a small company, I was able to get experience in all departments. Constantly networking and marketing is a struggle with being an entrepreur but you learn how to balance your time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cassy Saba Jewelry story. Tell us more about the business.
I have many collections and specialize in fine and fashion jewelry. What sets me apart is that I offer wholesale pricing and being in the NYC diamond district I know all the right people for every jewelry need. Whether someone is looking for a small diamond for an engagment ring or a huge diamond, I work directly with diamond dealers and factories. I work very intimately with my clients to make sure each person feels special and important. Working with me is not a retail store experience.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe that opportunities aren’t just handed to you. I think you always need to put your best self out there. It’s important to work hard and stay positive and keep grinding even when you get discouraged, because it will happen a lot being an entrepreneur. I am fortunate and blessed to be born in this country and have opportunities and lots of support around me. God has opened many doors.
