Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Cherry.
Candice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
“A girl should be two things: Who and What she wants.” -Coco Chanel
This inspirational quote embodies the belief behind my business and dreams. I, Candice Cherry, am the founder and Chief Jeweled Officer of all things that sparkle, The Queens’ Jewels.
Growing up as an only child in St. Louis, Missouri, my loving parents always preached to me that I could do and be anything I wanted to. They provided every opportunity possible for me to be able to explore the endless possibilities that life has to offer. From a young age, they knew that I had a creative and entrepreneurial spirit. I was always creating beautiful things from rhinestone and ribbon picture frames to bedazzling clothing and shoes, I tried it all. My love for things that sparkle is how the idea for The Queens’ Jewels was born. My husband, Curt and I attended a gorgeous black tie wedding a couple of years ago. While sipping my wine all dressed up, it dawned on me that if I added diamonds to wine glasses it would add sparkle to the table and of course to the person holding the glass. It was an extra wow factor. I immediately took off my costume diamond earring and held it up to the glass. A brilliant idea it was and an evening that I will always remember. I stayed up all night trying to figure out how to get the diamond to attach to the glass. It took a few months and when I found the correct product, I knew my family and friends would love them. The Queens’ Jewels was founded on the idea that wine glasses should not be plain and boring, but beautiful and full of sparkle to represent individual personalities, moments in time, and serve as great conversations pieces. Upon turning 40, a couple of years ago, as a housewife and mother of two teenagers, I felt that I had an exceptional product and I needed to show my children that no matter how old you are, there is still time to follow your dreams and never give up. I traded in the many hats I wear daily from a soccer mom, baseball mom, cook, carpool driver, homework helper and replaced them with a crown ready to conquer the world. I knew it was time to step into the business world knowing that I created a gorgeous product that the world needed to see. I attended the Dallas and Atlanta Markets and the response was overwhelming. I had more orders than I knew what to do with. From that moment, I knew that my glasses were making a statement and touching people’s lives. To date, we have had customers call to place orders for many special occasions, milestones, birthday celebrations, anniversaries, girls’ weekends, weddings you name it. We were brought to tears because we had a customer call to place an order for a funeral saying that the diamond fleur de lis glass represented her father in law’s life. Another customer had us make pink ribbons for when her friend finished the last round of chemotherapy and rang the bell. It is amazing to me that not only are my glasses touching people’s lives, but in return, these people are deeply touching mine and I am honored that they have chosen The Queens’ Jewels. I am forever grateful to be part of their lives. Many ask why Queens’ is not spelled Queen’s. It is simple…my glasses are made for all of us. They are for ALL women, we are all Queens. We all deserve to sparkle.
Our glasses can be found in specialty gift shops from coast to coast as well as internationally. We’ve come a long way in three years and we are excited to see what the future holds.
Has it been a smooth road?
As any business owner would say, the road isn’t always smooth and that is to be expected. Every day is a learning experience. While I have a BA in Communications, I don’t have a business/manufacturing degree. I have had to do quite a bit of research to understand how to make it in the business world. For example, the more serious I was about getting my product into the world, the more I needed to know about patents, copyrights and all legal and insurance matters. I am proud to say that The Queens’ Jewels is patent pending and copyrighted. Luckily, my husband has a business degree and helped me every step of the way.
Another struggle was the demand for our glasses. I started off small with maybe 12 jewels to choose from on stemmed glasses. I learned quickly that there was a demand for more than stemmed. Customers wanted stemless, pilsner beer glasses and more jewels to choose from. Since then, we have added over 40 jewels, with champagne flutes and double old fashioned glasses coming in in 2018.
The last but most important challenge was figuring out how to balance family life. My family is the most important thing to me. My two teens, Sam (16) and Madison (13) can be challenging…keeping up with homework, laundry, meals, keeping up with housecleaning, carpooling, sleepovers…I had to set a work time limit and completely shut down after hours to be able to spend quality time with my family. It is what being a mom is all about and I certainly don’t want to look back on my life and feel like I missed out. As my business has grown, I have enlisted the kids help with making gift boxes and making local deliveries. I believe it is extremely important for them to be involved and see how a business is run.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Queens’ Jewels – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the founder and Chief Jeweled Officer of The Queens’ Jewels. I design each jewel in each collection. Each jeweled glass is handmade by me, not a machine. Each glass is washed by my husband, Curt in a commercial dishwasher, and then turned over to my Mother in Law, Janine, and a team of others to inspect each glass for perfection. The glass makes it to me where it is jeweled and cleaned up, passed on to our shipping department where it is ready to ship to our stores.
I am most proud of how my clientele have embraced my brand. I receive phone calls or email with daily orders telling me how quickly they are selling them. That is the best feeling.
We have independent reps across the country that sell for us that are doing a tremendous job as well as our national distributor, Cork Pops who have been absolutely amazing bringing in many accounts daily. We are so fortunate to be paired up with them.
I am proud to have the opportunity to show my princess and prince that a woman can be a Queen in the business world. I am proud that my family is proud of me.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I LOVE Arizona. My family lives in Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch so I know it well. It is my second home. It is such a fun city with something to offer everyone. From golf clubs, to great restaurants to shopping! Our glasses can be found in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, Glendale, Fountain Hills, Gold Canyon, Tucson etc.
I am sad that it is so far from St. Louis!
