Meet Brian Korbelik of Body & Brain Yoga and Tai-Chi in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Korbelik.

Brian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first came to a Body & Brain Center in Denver in the fall of 2008, after recently leaving college in my senior year. I had tremendous bouts with anxiety and panic attacks, which eventually led to depression since I was about 5 years old. I kept it under control fairly well until I was 15 years old. At that time, it became worse and high school was very challenging only for this reason. I was a straight-A student, I was popular, and nobody knew what was going on beneath the surface. I think it became more obvious to others when I went to college.

I started to have such intense anxiety in many different types of situations that I could no longer conceal it anymore. That is when I connected with a mental health professional and I was prescribed medication (Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac at different times, and Xanax for immediate relief). I took the medication and all seemed better… for awhile. Although I no longer felt any pain, I didn’t seem to feel any happier. It felt as if the medication numbed the anxiety but it numbed many other things too. Although I didn’t feel anxious, it felt like I couldn’t feel that much joy either. So, I took the medication but, I kept seeking. I never thought of myself as a spiritual person but, I just kept seeking. There is no other way to explain it. Books started to cross my path and I even started working with a spiritually minded psychotherapist/yoga enthusiast who opened my eyes to many things. Still, though I needed something more.

In my senior year of college, I tried to go off the medication only to find myself in a downward spiral that caused me to contemplate taking my own life. I left college so I could start anew and deal with what was really happening. I went back on medication but this time, I kept looking for answers beyond that. This is what brought me to the Body & Brain Yoga Center. Initially, I was just looking for some yoga and meditation to help me calm my mind but, Body & Brain ended up being much more than that. We have a very comprehensive training system that can guide many individuals to improve their health and well-being naturally, no matter what their health of life issues may be.

After nine months of doing this training, I was able to successfully go off medication totally. This is something I was told by many psychiatrists would never be possible. I went off medicine in 2009 and have never returned back to it. I’ve felt more life and vitality in my body and mind than ever before. That is why I made this into a career path for myself. This is not just what I enjoy doing or just a career, I feel a clear purpose that I need to share this training with others. I feel a sense of purpose and power being able to help other individuals take back their health and be the masters of their bodies and minds.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been an entirely smooth road. I’ve experienced many times when I wanted to give up and just take it easy. It’s not always easy to solve things the right way and find the real solution. It’s much easier just to pop a pill and settle for that. But, I have something inside of me, a part of me that is not willing to settle for anything less than what is the truth, what is the real solution. In my whole time with Body & Brain, I have felt that I am getting to know myself deeper and deeper and it has empowered me tremendously. And, I have seen so many others become empowered as well.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Body & Brain Yoga and Tai-Chi – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a holistic health and wellness organization. We specialize in helping people manage their health much more effectively through a variety of training methods. We have group classes, private sessions, workshops, retreats, etc. I would say we are known best for upholding a very high standard of quality in terms of the training we deliver. Not just anyone can become an instructor. You cannot become a teacher just because you have a yoga certification.

The only way to teach Body & Brain is to experience for yourself first, for a period of time, and then apply for an instructors training course. We don’t exactly teach yoga in the traditional sense. Our training consists of a Korean mind-body training system that is rooted in the SunDo tradition of enlightened living. We have a very dynamic training system that consists of meridian stretching (stretching and aligning the channels of Ki (energy) in the body), various methods of meditation, ki-gong, tai-chi, and breathing.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to our company’s vision of creating a healthier and brighter world becoming more of a reality. We all work hard and proactively daily to help many people improve their health and wellbeing naturally and it is our dream to spread this more to the whole world to make a healthier planet and humanity in body and mind. Currently, we are using an application we created for smartphones called “1 Minute Change”. We are trying to share this simple training method with 100 million individuals around the world so they can see how just taking 1 minute every hour for ten hours (10 minutes per day) to engage in a mindfulness and/or exercise activity can dramatically change how they feel in their bodies and minds. If they just take one minute of action 10 times per day tremendous changes are possible.

We are doing this to also make our training more accessible to many people, even those who don’t have a Body & Brain Center nearby. So, I think I am most excited about the possibility of helping many more people improve their health and well-being through awakening the fullest potential in their bodies and minds. That’s the only reason I focus so much on this work and why I feel so inspired by it. The possibilities for this in the future are limitless and I’m so excited to see them come to fruition. Our world really needs this right now.
