Meet Brandt Woods

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandt Woods.

Hi Brandt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
About seven years ago, I was going to college to be a counselor. I found myself constantly thinking about art the entire time and eventually dropped out.

Then, I spent most of the time since then trying to find a way to make a living as a children’s book illustrator/comic artist.

Exactly one year ago (April 2021), I got an idea in my head for a mural in my downtown area and pitched the idea to the local business building owner. It was of a cactus-shaped guitar and it was for a musical instrument store.

After that initial mural, I haven’t had a week off work since.

Then in September, I launched a huge project where I set off to paint 31 murals on Main Street in Safford, AZ. I wanted to brighten up the beige palette of the street and bring more attention and business to my town. I am currently at #22 of the 31 to be completed.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There has been so many times I have tried to get off this path or choose something new for myself. And yet every time I end up right back on track. I’ve sacrificed my 20s in hopes of finding my profitable path in art, and I feel I’m starting to reach that point now.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So I mostly work with businesses and cities to bring them attention through art and murals.

The goal of my art is to make something that people want to stand in front of and take a photo. Then hopefully this leads them to sharing it on social media and bringing more attention to my clients.

What I’m most proud of is how many people have come to visit my small town to see my murals. I have been told by many people that they decided to take a trip to Safford, specifically because of my art around town. That is the best compliment to me.

I think there’s very few people that can walk around their downtown area and says “Here’s my portfolio.”

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me the happiest is seeing the potential for a wall or space and then seeing it come to life.

So many times I’ve tried to explain what I see to people and I can tell that they can’t picture what I’m describing.

I think my greatest gift is being able to visualize something, and then make it appear. It doesn’t seem to be a common attribute among the people in my life.
