Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Haber.
Brandon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from the University of Arizona, I went to work in sales for a fortune 300 textile manufacturer, which ironically now is my largest supplier to my company. My territory was Phoenix, and I spent several years there and then one of their competitors hired me. About 6 years after college, my mother died tragically. I was very close to her and within a year, I had decided to quit my job and travel the world with a friend of mine, with a goal of deciding what I wanted to do when I returned. We visited over 35 countries and it was an experience I will never forget.
Upon my return, I initially thought I would start my own company, but I received an offer from a large flooring subcontractor to help grow their business. I was with this company for about 6 years, until January 2007 when I started One Source Flooring & Interiors. Now we’ve been in business for over 10 years, and I’m extremely proud that we’ve not only made it through the toughest economic climate but also have prospered.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I was able to realize my dream of opening my own business, my timing could have been better. By the time I started One Source in February 2007, it marked a historical downturn in the economy and the construction/home building industry was hit incredibly hard.
As I watched other businesses, some much larger and more established than my own go under, I wondered if I’d made a mistake. But, I also knew that If I could make it through that I could make it through anything in business. I became determined to not only stay in business but to also grow during this time. Some of my strongest business relationships were forged during this time and they were key to our growth when the economy recovered.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about One Source Flooring & Interiors – what should we know?
OneSource Flooring & Interiors is a locally owned and operated small business specializing in all types of flooring, tile/ stone applications, and interior design services for residential, multi-family and commercial/custom builder clients. Our work can be seen all over the valley in high profile locations like the upcoming Hotel Adeline, Scottsdale Quarter, a multitude of custom homes, luxury rental communities and The Residences at The Ritz Carlton, Dove Mountain.
I’m proud of the team that we’ve put together at OneSource. With a business our size communication and a willingness to pitch in is incredibly important. We all work hard each and every day to meet our common goals and make the office a great place to be. It’s what has enabled me to support the other thing I’m really proud of – our dedication to our clients. I’ll never claim that my business is perfect, but I am always ready and willing to work with a client to make things right.
In 2017, we were named ‘Best Flooring Company’ in the Arizona Foothills Magazine ‘Best of Our Valley’ Poll. It was a huge morale booster for both myself and the team to see our efforts pay off in such a tangible way.
OneSource is unique in the sense that we serve an incredibly diverse clientele. The company consists of two main divisions. One is dedicated to multi-family clients and specializes in quick turns for apartment/condo complexes, and short or long-term rentals across the valley. We handle anywhere from 10-50 flooring jobs per day in this division. Maintaining our quality while managing such high volume means every member of the team must be on top of their part of the process and leaves very little room for error.
Our other division specializes in working with both Residential Spec/Custom and Commercial builders. We work on everything from custom homes, hotels, and hospitals to tenant improvements, restaurants, stores, and remodels. Although we typically work directly with the builders and their designers, we also take appointments and offer materials and design services to homeowners. We are not a typical “retail” store but we are happy to work directly with homeowners.
Another area that sets us apart is our commitment to helping our clients keep an eye on their bottom line. Value engineering is equally important for both divisions. Many times, clients may come in with materials or a look they already love. Our Designers and Account Managers will meet with them to build a profile of their desired aesthetic then do the research to find alternatives that offer the same quality and look at a better price.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance is what I feel has been and will be most important to our success. That same perseverance means I’m never willing to leave a deal until I know we’ve done everything we can to leave our clients – from builder, to designer, to eventual owner – pleased with our work. Going the extra mile with them has paid off ten-fold in referrals and longevity for my business.
