Meet Bethany Dean of Little Lucy’s Tot School

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Dean.

Hi Bethany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a former first-grade teacher who turned stay-at-home mom to my daughter Lucy. In 2020 during our pandemic and quarantine months, I started my own “Tot School” at home with Lucy to entertain ourselves and start some learning. Lucy was about 16 months old at the time, and I wanted to use my teaching background to create resources to use. I created games, cards, puzzles, sensory play, and crafts for Lucy and me to play with and engage her in learning about fun topics she enjoyed. I started with a few themed weeks of fun play, crafts, and games focused on the farm and ocean. I had the biggest hype team with friends and family asking to share all the fun stuff I was using and creating. This led to the opening of Little Lucy’s Tot School! I’ve had amazing support from fellow moms wanting to engage their toddlers in hands-on learning and sensory play ideas! My online shop opened in September 2020 and has been a fun adventure ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business during the pandemic meant some aspects I would have normally wanted to run with had to be put on hold. Since the pandemic started to ease up, we’ve been able to get more engaged with the community. We’ve done a few local Phoenix markets, have products available at local retailers, and are planning to have classes & play-dates scheduled in the future.

As you know, we’re big fans of Little Lucy’s Tot School. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
My business, Little Lucy’s Tot School, is run solely by me and inspired by my daughter Lucy. Mama created, Toddler inspired by my slogan, which couldn’t be more accurate. I create engaging and playful learning bundles for toddlers. These bundles are meant to engage little learners in learning activities about their favorite themes that focus on enhancing cognitive skills, vocabulary, speech and language skills, fine motor skills, and sensory needs. Activities include puzzles, matching games, flashcards, magnets, recognition cards, open-ended play, real-life photos, sensory bin play, and more.

As a former early education educator, I am well rehearsed and knowledgeable about how young children learn and develop. Young children learn in various ways, and Little Lucy Tot School bundles are created to engage learners of all shapes, sizes, abilities, and interests. Each bundle is focused on a specific theme and includes real images, activities, games, and sensory play based on that theme. Construction, for example, is one of our best sellers. The Construction Tot School Bundle includes four activities: flashcards, puzzles, identifying cards + wooden pins, and magnets, including eight different construction trucks. Also included in the bundle is a sensory filler + wooden scoop, and usage guide, all packaged with love in a reusable mesh pouch to contain and store all learning supplies for easy play access. As a former teacher, I love to inspire and help others. I want to empower parents to play with their little ones while helping them learn. I hope anyone and everyone who uses Little Lucy’s Tot School products finds themself and their little ones inspired too!

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is a feeling and emotion, not tangible. Success comes from pride, stepping out of your comfort zone, taking risks, getting creative, and learning.
