Has it been a smooth road?
My two businesses Curves South Mountain and SETAY Dance and Fitness Event Center were both self-funded. After the Curves South Mountain five year franchise agreement ended, the studio was remodeled into SETAY I. Unexpectedly after residing in that space for 6.5 years, the landlord requested a $1,300 monthly rent increase which left only 30 days for relocation to more affordable studio.

Relocating to the second location in such a hurry was a huge mistake as it lead to a very costly remodel and space sharing with a church. This caused my schedule to be reduced by half which lead to reduced income and a very contentious atmosphere with the new landlord when she would rent her side out to other churches for concerts while my classes were in session.

After seven months, I realized this just wasn’t going to work when I found out there was no heat in the building. The third SETAY studio relocated lead to a third costly remodel.

Although the instructor lead dance and fitness classes were the responsibility of the Independent Contractors, Marketing assistance was provided with the rental agreement. With a lack of business and marketing acumen, they were not consistent in creating marketing materials partnering with SETAY to properly market their classes, which left it up to SETAY, this is what led to the third-tier business model of total Space rental.

Self-funding my two businesses has led to using Credit Cards to keep the business operational and business credit issues. Not having business credit by not borrowing money for nine years is now becoming an issue when applying for business operations funding. At this time, consolidation of the credit cards is now causing higher monthly expenses. I am now seeking financial assistance to be able to grow the business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Setay Dance and Fitness, Event Center story. Tell us more about the business.
Having a community atmosphere offering space rental for Dance, Fitness and specialty events and offering a semi-private fitness center, SETAY Dance and Fitness morphed into Healthy Lifestyle Event Center after several Natural Path doctors and nutritionist began renting space for their specialty classes.

Being located in South Mountain, which is often identified as a lower income area of Phoenix, carries a stigma of being located in a crime ridden area. With the unique healthy lifestyle community classes and workshops being offered, SETAY’s vision is to dispel this perception by ensuring the success of SETAY as a premier studio with affordable space rental for all nationalities and unique classes and events.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
With the fact that my business model is unique and I am receiving interest to offer a similar business in other cities in Phoenix and the surrounding area. My vision is to eventually offer franchise opportunities.
