Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita McLeod.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Anita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an Arizona native, originally from Tucson. My husband’s job had us move around a few times and landed us back in Arizona. I have also been a hairdresser for 12 years. I started my passion for photography in 2009 when we moved back to Arizona. My Mother was working on her degree in Landscape Architecture with her BFA in photography.
During her schooling she had a big project she was working on, we would hop in the car and go take photos! At that time, I only had a point and shoot Canon camera, but I learned so much from her showing me angles, how to use light to my advantage and so much more! After a while, I decided I really wanted to pursue photography.
Although, my father says my love of photography started when I was little with my first toy camera. My grandfather on my mother’s side was also a photographer in World War II. He took photos out of airplanes. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree! My husband, who is my biggest supporter, got me my first DSLR and a few lenses for Christmas, and I’ve been hooked ever since! My nature and landscape photos are even hanging on the walls of my husband’s office and a few other offices in his building. He is super proud of me and loves showing off my work!
One of my childhood friends also started photography around the same time as me and we would call each other for advice, And give each other tips when we learned something new. We still do that years later. Fast forward to now, I have absolutely fallen in love with photography, whether it be a paid gig, or just getting out shooting models, or being in nature, I absolutely love everything about photography! It feeds my soul.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it hasn’t been bad at all! I think the struggles are normal for everyone pursuing photography. Building a business from the ground up always takes time. One of the valuable lessons my mother taught me was to grab all of my friends, family, anyone I could get in front of my camera and practice, practice, practice! I did this for years until I felt confident enough to start charging. It has and still continues to be an amazing journey!
Please tell us about AM Studios.
I primarily shoot weddings, engagements and boudoir. I do shoot a lot of nature and wild horses at the Salt River and the Gila River wild horses that are near Maricopa. I also work with models and dancers. I also have a huge personal project I’m in the middle of that I am super excited about! I was also commissioned by my husbands boss to take some Airstreams out and do some photos of them with gorgeous landscape backgrounds. They decorate the walls at the store.
I pride myself on customer service and giving my all at each session/wedding to provide my clients with the best experience I can give them. With my love of nature, I absolutely love going out and showcasing that beauty in my sessions, whether it be an after wedding bridal session, engagement session or an outdoor boudoir session, even a session with a model. I feel that my darker, more moody style of editing with a mix of nature, really gives a unique look to my photos.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It’s so hard to narrow it down to one favorite memory. One memory is growing up, in the summers, we would go to Mission Beach in San Diego and visit my Great Uncle Ronnie. I absolutely love going to the beach to this day! And since I can’t narrow it down, I’ll make it short. I was a competitive gymnast, and we would travel all around going to meets.
Being from Tucson, we would come up to Phoenix a lot during competition season.
Staying at the hotels and doing handstands on fountains, in elevators and those road trips are also some of my fondest memories. I also used to love hanging out with my dad when he was fixing cars. That has turned me into a huge car lover, and I can do a few things under the hood too!
