Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Wattie and Frank Fuchs. Them and their team share their story with us below:
At the beginning of the Covid pandemic in early 2020 Frank and Amanda both joined an online Tony Robbins seminar and became fast friends as Frank had a new puppy and Amanda is a dog trainer and competitive dog agility athlete. They quickly realized their shared love for dogs and business and in October 2020 founded Dog-Eh!
Once the company was founded, they began developing three different dog supplements, getting Health Canada approval as Veterinary Health Products, securing funding, and doing all the things to bring a company to life.
While the news was discussing the doom and gloom of the pandemic, the declining economy, and the ever-growing list of businesses closing their doors, Frank and Amanda pushed on with their passion to serve the dog community. December 2021, they launched Joint Support, Metabolism Support, Skin & Coat Plus, and various items for people including clothing, candles, and more!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While we haven’t had the smoothest road, we prefer to look at every obstacle that was thrown our way as a speed bump along our journey. It’s this attitude of never letting anything stop us that we believe allows us to persevere.
We knew right from the beginning that we wanted our dog supplements to be manufactured to the same standards as products for human consumption. A major hurdle for us was to find a supplement manufacturer that would even discuss products not meant for human consumption as a lot of them just wouldn’t even consider it. There were a lot of communications to many different places before we had a list of preferred manufacturers and started our due diligence to decide on which one, we wanted to move forward with.
Once we had our manufacturer decided on, we were able to run more solid numbers for our business plan and could approach banks for business loans. The problem was no one wanted to give us funding. Everyone advertised and offered various business loans but no one wanted to give a loan to a brand-new business. We even looked at government grants and bursaries, but nothing was available to us at that time. So, we got resourceful and found ourselves accepted into a business accelerator program in Manitoba, Canada (North Forge East) and they helped us navigate our way to getting funding with Futurpreneur Canada and Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).
Throughout all the ups and downs, Frank and Amanda have gotten through it all without never having met each other in person. Frank lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Amanda lives in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. They’re about a 3-day drive away from each other during the height of Covid-19 Canadian travel restrictions. They utilized technology such as phone calls, video calls, screen sharing, online team, and task tracking programs, cloud drives, and other technology to keep them connected, on track, and on the same page.
Finally, after overcoming so many obstacles, we had our funding, we had our suppliers, our orders were in, we had set a launch date and our supplement orders were almost done being manufactured when the province of British Columbia endured heavy rains, The rains were so bad it caused flooding across the province and ended up shutting down British Columbia from the rest of Canada. No shipments were being transported out of the province unless they drove south, through the United States, and back up to Canada and not all shipping companies were able to do this. Frank and Amanda had to suddenly jump on the phones and call shipping companies to figure out how to get the supplements out of British Columbia and into Manitoba and Ontario in time for their December launch. The first shipping company that said they could do this ended up wasting several previous pre-launch days and ended up not being able to do it, so they had to start the search over again, and finally, the second shipping company had it shipped to them just days before their scheduled launch.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Inspired by their love for dogs and fueled by their passion to serve the dog community, our co-founders Frank and Amanda saw a need for limited ingredient, human-grade dog supplements. Dog-Eh! is a fun, modern, Canadian brand that puts your dog’s health as the central focus for everything we do. From Joint Support to Metabolism Support to Skin & Coat Plus, our supplements aim to help three common dog health issues. As our company grows so will our product offerings and our abilities to help people make the most out of every day with their dog.
How do you think about luck?
Luck is in the eye of the beholder. Depending on the way someone looks at something it could be either good or bad luck. By being open to new people and opportunities while keeping a positive mindset, amazing things can happen. If it wasn’t for both Frank and Amanda having this outlook, they wouldn’t have both joined the same online seminar and wouldn’t have been receptive to connecting with one another, sharing dog training tips, building a friendship, and eventually a business.
