Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Slater.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up, I never dreamt of being a photographer. I took art classes my whole life and knew that I had a passion for the creatives, but had never once picked up a camera and wanted it to be my full-time job! After quitting my graphic design classes in college due to finances, I worked in the healthcare industry at a chiropractor’s office and a local hospital. I scheduled patient exams and spoke with health insurance companies regularly. I worked in that industry for three years before feeling utterly drained and unenthusiastic about my job setting. Since I didn’t have a college degree, I felt that there wasn’t a particular expertise that I was most drawn to and created for. My husband, sister and brother-in-law then encouraged me to quit my job and pursue something creative, like photography. Having NO prior knowledge about photography, I said ok and quit my job the following week!
My sister and brother-in-law gifted me with my first camera – little did I know how much I would love the adventure I was about to go on! Since jumping headfirst into starting, learning, running and operating my own photography business full-time, I’ve gained SUCH a passion for it; specifically wedding photography. Being able to be a part of such a momentous part of someone’s life, telling their special love story, is something that never gets old. My photography skill and knowledge has vastly changed from what it was when I started my business a few years ago – I’ve learned so much along the way and have 100% honed in on my calling in life: to tell Real, Raw + Authentic love stories of sweet beloveds.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a Phoenix and Beyond Bohemian Wedding and Adventure Elopement Photographer who is passionate about capturing Real, Raw + Authentic moments that are shared between beloveds. I’m for the couples that believe in holding each other tightly and letting their emotions get the best of them. For the ones that whisper secrets and laugh together. For the ones that dream of their future, and not just of their wedding day. For the beloveds that feel as if they’re the only ones in the room. Most of all, I’m for the ones that aren’t afraid to be authentically them.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Find out what YOUR thing is; what your vision and voice is going to be through your business. MAKE it personal. Help your clients to feel like you’re their friend. Strive to capture the in-between moments.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
