Today we’d like to introduce you to Allen Rohe.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Allen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I completed my graduate education in audiology from The University of North Carolina in 1992. The early part of my career involved working within a medical school/hospital setting with an emphasis on evaluating dizzy patients, testing premature infants for hearing loss in the neonatal intensive care unit, conducting hearing nerve preservation during ear-related neurosurgical procedures on our audiology patients, and helping our patients hear better and live better lives. Along the way, I became particularly interested in working with complex cases involving symptoms of tinnitus and hyperacusis, a chronic ringing in the ears and abnormal loudness tolerance problems, respectively. Most disturbing to me was observing how quickly these ear-related problems could quickly unravel a person’s otherwise normal life. Their desperate searches for help within the medical community often left them being told they must learn to live with the problem – erasing any sense of hope. Very few of these patients qualify as medical/surgical cases and prescription medications are generally ineffective at providing symptomatic relief.
This is where I stepped in and built the Tinnitus & Hyperacusis Center of Arizona. Knowing that the symptoms themselves were untreatable medically/surgically/pharmaceutically, I dedicated myself to learning and understanding the complex processes that take place between the ear and the brain that causes so much suffering. After years of dedicated study, traveling from coast to coast to accomplish much of this, I developed a program that essentially desensitizes the central nervous system pathways involved and eases the suffering. It is a systematic approach delivered over an 8 week period that teaches the patient how to accomplish this and to return to a normal life. even though the sound can still be heard.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Current challenges include lack of significant funding for quality research, lack of insurance reimbursement for these services and a device driven industry that can be very expensive for these patients. Learning how to truly help these patients required me to completely step out of my comfort zone and re-educate myself far beyond what was taught in graduate school. It has definitely been an uphill climb but very rewarding.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tinnitus & Hyperacusis Center of Arizona – what should we know?
I am proud of setting such a high standard for my company and for the trust that I have earned from patients and physicians alike. One of our most prominent tinnitus experts here in the United States, a physician based out of Atlanta is going into semi-retirement. I was honored to be selected as one of the three professionals he asked to take over his cases. Through modern technology, I have worked with cases as far away as Nepal, Sweden, and Israel. Removing barriers is key to providing quality care in traditionally difficult to reach places. Even though my office is in Tempe, AZ several of my current cases are working with me from their homes in Arkansas, Alaska and Maryland. I am also known for my work with people in the music industry. I routinely work with musician’s, audio engineers, security personnel, worship groups, local bands, and pro touring bands – connecting them with custom hearing protection and in-ear monitoring systems. I also work with up and coming musicians, helping young people to protect their ears so they can perform without risk of damage (hearing loss and tinnitus). We provided over half of the Phoenix Symphony recently with their custom hearing protection solution.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Hard work, dedication and persistence. Repeat.
