Meet Alexandra Dermody

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Dermody.

Hi Alexandra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I graduated from Arizona State University in 2019, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do for work. I grew up dancing so I did have a few teaching jobs lined up but that wasn’t going to support me full-time. I graduated with a minor in digital audiences and knew I had an interest in Social Media. It wasn’t until that August that I finally met Meghan. The owner and founder of girl about town and the Pearce family foundation. I met her while judging my current teams Pom Team tryouts. I was scheduled to coach the JV team that season at Desert Mountain High School, and she just so happened to be an alumni.

The head coach above me had mentioned that Meghan and a small business and was looking for someone to help run her social media. Embarrassingly enough, I immediately introduce myself and flat out asked her if she needed someone to work for her. I had absolutely fell in love with a girl about town Instagram and everything it stood for. Needless to say, it worked out and I started in the office two weeks later. Come today I have been with girls about town and the Pearce family foundation for two years! I have watched both companies grow tremendously as well as growing my professional experiences and skills.

Girl about town is an event planning company for incoming travelers, our biggest clients are usually bachelorettes! When I first started at girl about town there were only three of us in the office and we had about one or two bachelorettes every week or so. Now we have most 15 bachelorette groups weekly, five full-time employees, and more than ten part-time assistants! It’s been truly amazing to be a part of such growth. When I first started at girl about town, I had also mentioned that it would be great to be able to run other people’s social media accounts other than our own. Since I started here two years ago, I now run six other social media accounts for small businesses and Airbnb’s in the valley. I have been able to learn new skills such as photography and design throughout this process as well as making great connections in the Scottsdale area.

I am forever grateful for the opportunity that Meghan gave me, and I can’t wait to continue to grow girl about town and the Pierce family foundation!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think it’s easy to say that the past year and a half has not been smooth for anyone, especially small businesses. When I first started at GAT (august 2019) we were nowhere as busy as we are today. Girl About Town was still brand new! Finally, in March 2020 we had really started to pick up our bookings. Each week our groups were slowly increasing and we were so excited to welcome all of our guests to Scottsdale. This slowly came to a halt and all of our groups canceled within two weeks when Covid initially hit. We were devastated as a group we were determined to carry-on and shift our business. We quickly adapted to online and created virtual party packages and started weekly zoom calls with other small businesses to spread positivity and encouragement. All of our hard work and dedication really shown and is definitely paying off today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently the social media manager for girl about town and the Pearce family foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona. The girl about town Instagram account blows through content like crazy, so it is up to me to make sure that there’s always fun and exciting bachelorette content. We often have huge photoshoots with mock bachelorette parties that really bring our page to life. It is a challenge but it is also extremely fun to curate and execute these bachelorette moments. My goal is that when a bride to be sees our page she can truly envision what her bachelorette weekend could be.

On top of running the Instagram account for girl about town and the Pearce family foundation, I also run a number of accounts for local small businesses. They range from private chefs, Airbnb’s, and even a yoga instructor. My weekly tasks include scheduling posts for each account, creating fun interactive stories, and engaging with other accounts. Each day and week is a little different but I enjoy the challenge of juggling such a wide range of accounts.

I am most proud of the growth I have had in the past two years. Coming straight out of college, it is hard to find a job and really enjoy doing because everyone expects you to already have years upon years of experience. Being social media manager can be a daunting task for many but it is always worthwhile to see your content succeed and your client’s business grow.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, my entire personality revolved around my love for dance. I was hard-working, dedicated, and always striving to be better than I was the day before. Growing up in this atmosphere has made me well-disciplined and respectful, but also taught me that it is important to put passion behind everything you do in life.
