Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cardineau.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alex. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Sip was founded by Owners Tida & Travis Radevski. The two had dreams of owning their own spot, be it a coffee shop, a bar, or a restaurant. The initial desire was to create a place for people to connect, meet, and tell sit around telling each other stories. As a kid growing up in rural Pennsylvania, Travis recalls heading down to the new McDonald’s to sit around and listen to all the old guys chit chat and tell stories. He wanted to recreate an environment like that, not quite like Mickey D’s, but a comfortable atmosphere where people can engage with one another. Coffee is an important ingredient in this scenario, & adding a little beer and liquor never hurts either!
After years of contemplating, saving money, and looking for locations Travis & Tida finally made the decision to go for it. He found our first location, at Scottsdale and Goldwater in the Old Town Scottsdale area (Sip House), shortly before running into me. He and his wife had gone out for lunch to a new bar in Tempe, where I happened to be tending. We kicked it off immediately & before I knew it I was on board in the planning and development of the first Sip. Fast forward 4 years later & Travis, Tida, & I are now working on our third location on the NE corner of Scottsdale & Shea (Sip Kitchen), with a second location located on 36th St. & Indian School Rd. in the Arcadia area of Phoenix (Sip Garage).
Our concept is definitely still growing & developing, but we have stayed focused on a few main tenets of the business; Exceptional Coffee without the bougie rhetoric, always a great selection of craft beer, quality & as much local ingredients as we can get a hold of, good & frequently loud music, and a comfortable & inviting environment. We really try to bring in staff that are positive, friendly, knowledgeable, outgoing, & passionate about what they do. I think that is what has really driven our success thus far. We have built up an amazing base of regulars and diehard Sippers over the years, many of which have become not only friends but family & some have even joined our team.
Travis, Tida, & I as well as the rest of the Sip Crew are really excited about this new third location and everything else to come. We hope we continue to grow and succeed here in in Phoenix & AZ. The goal is to keep expanding throughout the state & maybe just maybe one day we will branch out to other states.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, no definitely not. Although Travis’ grow up in a family of bar owners, he himself had no experience in running a bar. His wife Tida had spent many years tending bar and managing in the Old Town are, but the birth of their first child definitely kept her focus more at home than at the business. When I met the two of them I was actually tending at my first bar job. So, we were lacking a bit of experience. Having to create all of our own systems and procedures has been a tough task, but we have managed so far & we continue to work on our business every day.
At this point in time I think one of our greatest strengths is having some amazing employees, who truly care about the company & want to see it grow. Makes a huge difference in the day to day operations of our business & makes Travis’ and my life much easier!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sip is a craft coffee and craft beer bar first and foremost. However, we also focus in cocktails and take a food very seriously. Over the years we have made a point to shift in the directions that the business & customers take us. I think it is really important for a business to be able to shift in the direction that its clientele takes leads them to. For the most part though, we have stayed a coffee and beer bar. Each location boasts a pretty good size rotating craft beer selection. Essentially, once one keg is empty something new comes on! We do frequent tap take overs as well, where we will tap 5-10 beers from a specific brewery and the representatives from that brewery will come in and give swag away to customers. It’s a pretty good time.
Coffee wise, we have been buying all of our coffee from local roaster Cartel Coffee Lab since the day we opened. We have always had a great relationship with those guys & gals over the years. Cartel is pretty strict on their coffee preparation procedures both in roasting & barista-ing. Which is great because they have passed that knowledge onto us. We in turn have created our own systems and methods of brewing coffee that fall in line with theirs. However, as I have stated before, our goal is not to be the “Best Craft Coffee Shop” in town, but instead to bridge the gap between the Starbucks & Dutch Bros goers & the Press & Cartel goers. Quick, quality, friendly & efficient service. I think that is what sets apart from many other coffee shops in town.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I personally love Phoenix & Scottsdale & I cannot wait to open a location in Tempe. I’ve had my sights set on one building in particular for half of my life! This is definitely a fun and growing city. I don’t think people are quite aware of how much the food & beverage industry has grown in this city, but it is pretty incredible.
