Today we’d like to introduce you to Afi Maita.
Afi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ello Lovies! Growing up in Finchley, North London at the age of 12 I would style my brothers & sisters for special occasions or just casual events as there were 9 of us (at the time!) & they were always asking me what to wear as the extrovert of the family!
Present day I’ve been a full time Stylist at the luxury brand I run my business through for 6 years now & living with the hereditary type 1 diabetes condition for 3 years, I created a blog that would allow me to do what I love (styling of course) & talk about how to navigate my styled looks wearing a medical device. That is how Afi Like Taffy was born it’s also abbreviated A.L.T. for alternate style!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Golly gumdrops it has not! With life I feel if you want something you have to take it, it’s very rarely given to you. I’ve had many failures & am still figuring things out today. I’ve styled clients who after doing all the research I could possibly do hated EVERY SINGLE ITEM I put in their room. However I had to reconfigure with the client & at the end its lead to phenomenal sales & a loyal client for life or with them never contacting me again!
Utilizing social media to build my brand & business is key & that too is an enigma!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is called Afi Like Taffy & my name is Afi. Having an unusual name in America I found a way to make it more memorable by rhyming it so I would tell people my name is Afi which sounds like Taffy hence Afi Like Taffy! I’m a Stylist & Style & Lifestyle blogger. I specialize in helping women feel their best selves by styling alternate looks based on their body types & for any occasion. What sets me apart is that I’m a Black British lady living & styling in America & I cater to the curvy, petite as well as medical device wearers (being one myself as a type 1 diabetic Tandem tslim: X2 pump wearer!)
What were you like growing up?
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, raised in England & I married An American man. Growing up with 8 other siblings I was a rebel as all my immediate brothers & sisters are twins! That’s right I have 3 sets of twins from my mum & Dad & being a non-twin myself I would get the most attention by dressing differently to the sets & trying to be noticed. That’s where my extrovert style was born. However, my main interest was in music & I sang in a 3 girl RnB group called In Harmz Way in North London. We would do mini concerts on our lunch breaks at the Mount school, Mill Hill with the infamous Amy Winehouse! We found a producer & were all set to take our group to the next level when we turned 18 with self-written & produced music but our parents chose education over music!
