Life & Work with Tyson Wilburn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyson Wilburn.

Hi Tyson, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Tyson Wilburn, aka CameraManLonzo and Tyson.Alonzo on my instagrams. I’m a photographer/videographer from Phoenix, AZ, where I grew up. Growing up, it was my 3 siblings and me, along with my parents. My dad was an artist; painting, music production, and songwriting were all things he used to do. While I didn’t exactly pick those up, I did pick up the creativeness he had and, to be honest, what his whole side of his family has. I got into photography when I got my camera last November. While it was overwhelming trying to shoot in a manual while knowing absolutely nothing about cameras, I taught myself by watching YouTube videos. When I got my camera, I started shooting street photography, just capturing the scenery in this beautiful city. After getting comfortable with the camera, I started shooting my friends, and from there, I realized this is something I’m good at and wanted to pursue. I started sharing the pictures on Instagram and even made another account for my photography. The reception I started getting fueled me to do it more and step it up each time with every project. I’ve been able to work with so many amazing people and made so many memories from great experiences through this past half-year. I can’t wait to see what else is in store.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, it’s been a bumpy road, but that’s what it’s supposed to be. All it’s been is learning, just taking what I can from each shoot to pass on to the next. While it hasn’t been hard, it’s been quite fun. My struggles come from lack of experience, equipment, and financial issues, but as I said, it’s supposed to be bumpy. All those things helped me get better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to shoot fashion and music photography with a mix of styles. Urban/street with a cinematic film aesthetic. I’m most proud of my progress so far, and I’m also proud of not being antisocial and getting out of my comfort zone to work with the people I do. What sets me apart from others is my perspective and style. While I draw much inspiration as most artists do, I feel I’ve blended it enough to have my distinctive style.

What does success mean to you?
Being successful to me means accomplishing goals you set out for yourself. Success is subjective and different for anyone; anyone can succeed if they achieve their goals, no matter how big or small; anything can mean everything to anybody.
