Life & Work with Kaitlynn Henderson of Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlynn Henderson.

Hi Kaitlynn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been creative. I grew up with a mom who sewed my clothes, did floral arrangements, created art for her classroom, and generally, put her mark on the things she touched. My parents always encouraged me to figure out how to do the things I wanted and were always happy to keep me in art supplies for my creations. This translated from coloring books to painting on canvas, to paint on my walls, to teaching myself to decorate, where I did that professionally for 3 years, to digital art and working for small businesses as a marketer and graphic designer. After having my second baby and becoming unhappy with the company I was working for, my husband pushed me to dive to start my own business. It’s always been our long-term goal to own our own company, and I have a passion for small businesses and helping other locals thrive.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not! Not only am I just starting, but I’m a mom of two under 3, a wife, I still work a traditional job under someone else, and I’m in school to complete my B.A. in Graphic Design with a minor in Marketing. Learning to juggle the needs of myself, my business, and my family has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever had to do, and yet, I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a graphic designer who hasn’t yet found my specialty. I’m known for being a jack of all trades. I dip my toes into a little bit of everything because I get bored easily and like to challenge myself! I’ve done so many things, but if I had to pick a specialty, it is helping small businesses thrive and providing them the things they need to be successful, from business cards and menus to flyers and signage. What makes me the proudest is seeing it on a client’s face that I’ve given them exactly what they are thinking of. I love taking the image from their head and making it a reality.

As far as what sets me apart? My ability to mimic styles-whether you’re looking for groovy, 70’s inspired designs or modern, simplistic line art, I can do it!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Oh, man. What an incredible question. I am absolutely a risk-taker. I always have been, and probably always will be. My husband and I were only dating for a few months before we got engaged (although we did end up waiting to get married), and back in 2018, I convinced him to pick up and move across the country with me, from the only place he had ever lived on a whim. It was a perfect time. He wanted to leave his job, I wasn’t working, and our lease was up, so we looked at a map, decided what our must-haves were for our new home, and decided between Phoenix and Chicago. It took some convincing, but I got him to choose Phoenix, and he’s been thankful ever since, ha! Besides starting up Hey Pigeon Designs, that’s probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. I had never been further West than seeing family in Eastern Kansas before that, so talk about a shock when we arrived in October of 2018, and it was 80 degrees and chilly. The 80 degrees I knew back home in Atlanta was HOT!

Risk is something that I don’t often have to talk myself into, but I needed to when my husband brought up Hey Pigeon. Somehow starting a business seemed so much bigger than moving across the country to a place I’d never been and didn’t know anyone. Ultimately though, the way I look at it is every single thing we do in our society is a risk. You can choose to be fearful, or you can face your fears, stand tall and scared, and push through. You’ll either have a lesson learned to grow from or a new reward for bringing it with you. Either way, you’ll bring something into the next challenge, the next risk, and the next reward.
