Life & Work with Gabby Wallace

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Wallace.

Hi Gabby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have followed the path to becoming a professional portrait and wedding photographer for the past seven years. In those years, I have fallen even deeper in love with capturing my client’s most authentic moments and special milestones.

I first became interested in photography as a young high schooler when my teacher/mentor who was a Sedona wedding photographer took me under her wing and started showing me the tricks of the trade. I started out doing the most basic grunt work – carrying bags, setting up lights, helping with edits, etc. but from the very beginning, I fell in love with witnessing the intimacy of each couple’s wedding day and the immense love they have for each other.

After graduating high school, I pursued a bachelor’s degree at NAU in business marketing. All the while shooting weddings on the weekends and breaks. My photography business grew as I met more locals and fell further in love with the hustle. My business degree helped me build a stable foundation for what would soon be Odd Fox Photography LLC.

While Odd Fox has been a freelance entity since 2015, I became a full-time wedding/portrait photographer and established Odd Fox Photography LLC at the beginning of 2020. Since falling head over heels for this industry and business, the universe has blessed me with amazing opportunities and attracted some of the most wonderful people into my life & for that, I am forever grateful!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a very methodical person and a planner by nature, my instinct is to plan every step of my career, though my path so far has also taught me to be very adaptable, and go with a flow person. I consider myself to be pretty early on in my career in general, so I’m lucky to be able to say I’m yet to encounter any huge obstacles or setbacks.

While I’m aware that a lot of my success so far has been a matter of taking the right opportunities when they presented themselves and following my instinct when it came to what paths happened to naturally fall before me, I’ve also put a ton of work into my business and haven’t been afraid to keep my nose to the grindstone.

I chose to major in business in college as it was a more widely applicable focus, and I didn’t shy away from working hard to keep good grades and pay my way through school with scholarships and my photography skills so that I could eventually apply all of that practical knowledge to building a strong foundation for my own business.

Once I had all the knowledge and skills I needed to know I could keep myself afloat and knew what my business values were, I was able to incorporate my passions for photography and connecting with people and build up more of that “go with the flow” mindset.

Since I never received any formal photography training in school, building all of those skills on my own time and learning to think on my feet and gain confidence in my skills when it came to taking photos were definitely some things I had to work on as well.

Out of college, I thought that I would want to work for a company and have a boss, the whole shebang, so I got a job in 2019 right out of school working in a field separate from photography. I ended up leaving the job in February of 2020 and I knew as soon as I was out of it that photography was really what I had wanted to do all along.

2 weeks later, when to my and the rest of the world’s surprise a pandemic hit, it was all just confirmed to me that my leaving my job and starting out on my own in the wedding and engagement photography field had all happened for a reason.

I’ve encountered the hiccups and challenges that any business owner just starting out does, but other than that the road so far has been super smooth and I’m just super grateful for how easily this path has been paved for me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Honestly, I feel that I fall into all of these categories! While I primarily consider myself an artist and creative, Odd Fox Photography is also a professional business and I worked hard to put myself through business school so that I can run my company effectively and ethically.

In short, I am a wedding, elopement, and portrait photographer. I specialize in taking beautiful photos of beautiful people in beautiful places! I am based in northern Arizona and focus on couples’ portraiture specifically. I love to highlight the connection and love between people, and my style is very colorful and dreamy, yet true to life. That’s something that I think sets my photography apart from the rest: my style is very timeless and acts as a time capsule, preserving the moment and emotions from the time the photo was taken honestly and naturally.

I’m well known for my unique, colorful style, but also for my branding. It was something I learned a bit about in school, so when it came to developing my own I already had a pretty good idea of how I wanted my company to be presented to and perceived by potential clients.

Because of all this, Odd Fox’s branding has been super consistent from the beginning, which helps with brand recognizability, and I’ve definitely come to be known for my funky personality and style, my eagerness to spoil my clients and make them feel absolutely beautiful, and my ability to deliver top-quality content and services. After everything I’ve done so far and continue to do in terms of running my own photography company, I’d say I’m most proud of how true to myself my work is.

I have very strong values and work ethic and I pour so much of my personality into my work and I think my business honestly reflects that. I’m proud of the fact that people know what they’re going to get when they decide to book with me, and that when I show up I usually exceed those expectations! It definitely means a lot to me to serve my client to my absolute best ability, and the fact that I feel I achieve that with every single booking makes me pretty damn proud.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is very hard to nail down. I was very blessed to have a great childhood and a super loving family that provided the best for me! My favorite chain of memories is every time that my mom would bring me to Sedona. Now I know that makes me sound like just another tourist, but I started visiting the town when I was four years old and it truly acted as the stage where so many of my core memories played out.

My mother and I lived in Southern California until I was 11, and we escaped to Sedona every year, twice a year, for a summer and winter vacation; we never once missed a season. She was a single mother and a very loving, hardworking woman who always made sure she could provide me with all the best in life but also made sure we were able to take these trips that meant so much to us.

Many of my happiest memories take place on the red rocks or in the creek, my mom waking me up early for morning hikes and eating shredded beef jerky on the trails. I will always be thankful to my mom for bringing me to this magical place time after time and for continuing to build upon those memories with me once we later made it our home.

My connection to Sedona is something that molded my life and influenced my art in a priceless way, and my connection to this place is something I will always cherish.
