Today we’d like to introduce you to DelRae Cicinelli.
DelRae, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a high school student, I was heavily involved in DECA (a business organization), and it sparked a love of entrepreneurship. I knew at 15 I wanted to own my own business, but I was undecided in terms of what type of business I would cultivate. Throughout college, the idea slipped away as I studied for accounting, and then made a switch to premed when I discovered my deep love for biology/medicine. As I changed majors with the goal of becoming a neurosurgeon, a medical discovery within myself put that on pause – well, eliminated the possibility. In 2014 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and my dreams of becoming a surgeon were put to an end. Despite this life-changing diagnosis, I saw it as a platform, as a way to inspire others for change. At the age of 21, I sought out natural alternatives to support my body’s natural processes to improve the symptoms I was having from Multiple Sclerosis. As I navigated my new normal of having full-sided numbness I was introduced to essential oils. It was a quick moment to belief for me; Frankincense reversed my symptoms, and to this day is the oil that stops a flare in its tracks. (*Side note – please understand not all essential oils are created equal, and each person’s experience may be different). From here I wanted to eliminate chemicals from my home and provide myself with a solution for skincare products due to sensitive skin struggles. As I began incorporating oils, I found a passion for skincare and stumbled my way into herbalism. Loil Life today is an evolution of the girl who found the magic in essential oils and the woman who harnesses the power of plants to craft skincare (and wellness products) infused with crystals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I do not believe entrepreneurship is ever a smooth road. After being in business for 5 years there are many rocky moments that I could share, but the most recent is the struggle of 2021. The year following COVID was the moment when I realized my business needed to pivot in a direction I was not expecting. In 2020 we opened our brick and mortar, and in 2021 we are closing it – although not in our original plan the roller coaster of being an entrepreneur showed me that eCommerce is the way to grow given the recent world events. Yes, prior to this there was a movement for eCommerce, however in 2020 we felt more love and support than in years past, and 2021 was a ghost town. Customers do not want to go in and shop, they want curbside, shopping via an app and picking up, online shopping, and delivery – this is a service we are moving to accommodate.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I believe each of us are set apart from one another simply by our journey. My way to herbalism inspires me to learn more and to incorporate the medicinal properties of plants into every single offering Loil Life sets on the shelves. Throughout the last few years crystals have become a part of my everyday being, and this year I moved to incorporate all parts of me into the brand. Loil Life (and simultaneously DelRae) are known for sharing simple (organic) ingredients with herbal and oil infusions, with a bit of Earth’s magic added in each moon cleansed and charged crystal found at the bottom of each bottle.
What makes you happy?
My family makes me happy – I have two young girls that remind me what it means to be playful and in the moment. My making studio makes me happy – it is a place of serenity and creativity that inspires me to stay grounded and let the passion and love shine through in each product. Nature makes me happy – being in the mountains frees my soul and allows me the reset we all need.
