Life & Work with Brooke Mills of Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Mills.

Hi Brooke, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We decided in 2016 that we needed a big fat reset button in our lives and had the idea to move away from our small town where my husband and I were both raised and start over on the Island of Oahu—mostly driven by wanderlust and our need for adventure. We sold it all, took our 3 kids and 12 suitcases, and started over. A fresh slate for us all to paint whatever canvas we wanted, really — I guess that is the art class way to look at it. I started my permanent makeup career on the Island of Oahu. My studio was in the adorable town of Kailua. If you haven’t been there, please, oh please, check it out. We lived on the island for 4 years and made our transition back to Arizona in 2020, ready to plant our roots back in the desert soil. Kids are growing up, so settling down somewhere permanent. It was just time. People always look confused when I tell them we decided to move back to this heat from Hawaiian paradise on our own. Being away really gave us a new vision and appreciation for Arizona. It was just calling us back home. But it’s home—no other way to put it.

Permanent Makeup has truly been a creative outlet for me. My husband and I are both Entrepreneurs, so our life/ work balance is always a struggle. If you have an answer on the secret to that, please send the experts our way! We are eager to know if that is a thing.

My studio, Lure Permanent Cosmetics, is now in Mesa, Arizona, as of January 2022. I have expanded my business into being an educator, and my new location provides the space and evolving vision I’ve hoped for from the beginning. I love the creative process of treating clients and have found further satisfaction in helping women enter the industry as PMU artists. I also offer training for existing artists to learn new services and perfect the areas they struggle with through my one-on-one and small group training.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, gosh, no. Not smooth. There’s been all the feels, the hills, and a few slip n’ slides we weren’t prepared for! I will say that I was granted such grace from the people of Hawaii. They welcomed me with open arms. I was the new kid when we moved over. We all were. We didn’t know a soul, so I had to hustle and hustle HARD to get clients. But I loved the hustle. It was always a thrill to get a referral. If you’re in the service industry, you know the hype of a referral. It feels like gold. Permanent Makeup is a high-stress job, especially in the beginning. You’re tattooing someone’s face, so don’t mess up. There’s a high element of stress in that. Also, Being a working mom is always a giant struggle. That one goes without saying. But growing together as a family while in Hawaii was something we are all so grateful for. As a family, we were all pretty vulnerable to uncharted territory. But watching my kids spread their wings and be brave was a beautiful evolution. I appreciate them seeing my husband and myself struggle too. They’re sweet and see when mom’s buoy is sinking, and they show up with a Crumbl Cookie at my work to cheer my spirits. That one happened last week, and I’m still not over how sweet it was. We kind of hit the lottery with our kids. They’re pretty amazing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Permanent Cosmetics, which covers Lip blushing, Eyeliner, and various styles of Permanent Brow services like Microblading, and Powder/ombre brow. Services are specific to skin type. Styles vary from what I like to refer to as a “pencil eyeliner” look vs. a “liquid eyeliner” look. The Velvet Edge eyeliner has a soft dusty edge that has been a highly requested service. Unlike traditional Eyeliner, this style gives a smudgy, smokier finish that doesn’t appear as a permanent cosmetic. It confuses people:) Which I love. When your permanent makeup doesn’t look like it, I’ve accomplished what I’m going for as an artist—keeping it natural.

When my clients tell me that friends/family can’t figure out what is different about them, they look so much younger and brighter. I take a moment to fist pump! All the heck yes, and hand claps for that reaction. Since each face is so individual, I love my ability to customize the right shape for my clients. I don’t have a specific shape as a go-to for my clients. Shaping is so incredibly individualized, as is color selection. That is something I take great pride in offering my clients. Lip blushing services help restore lost color to a client’s lips; a hot new service is now neutralizing dark tones in lips. It is a wonderful service that has become very popular for clients with melanin-rich lips seeking to brighten the dark areas, adding brightness and overall youthfulness to their appearance. You can view many before and after photos of my services from my Instagram.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I was going to Lake Powell. I grew up loving the lake and the sun. We went every year as a kid. I camped on the beach at Lone Rock for an entire week. I’m convinced it’s the best vacation on the planet. I have the sunspots on my shoulders to prove it, haha.
