Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Carstensen.
Aaron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got started with music when I was in my early teens. My dad showed me how to play guitar and introduced me to some rock/metal bands that really intrigued me. I found out that music could be made completely digitally and from there, I started creating songs on the computer with a guitar tabbing software. Finally, I discovered the production software Ableton and now it’s been ten years working in that.
During my late teens when I was in college, I descended into depression, anxiety and addiction. I knew my behaviors were not sustainable. I eventually dropped out of college to deal with my problems and that was a catalyst to me getting serious about music.
As I have been working into my later twenties, I have been discovering my personal music style and becoming a truly professional mixing engineer. 2020 was my first year as a licensed business and I look forward to growing as a business and artist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During my late teens, I suffered from serious depression and anxiety. Shortly after, I discovered alcohol as a means to ease the pain but unfortunately, this led to more problems. I tried quitting drinking on my own but that didn’t pan out. I graduated high school and went on to college where my problems were only intensified. After two years in college, I knew I had to make different decisions so I dropped out to figure out my sobriety. I’m 26 now and six years sober and finally feeling the payoff of the hard decisions I had to make when I was younger.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My primary income stream is production, mixing and mastering music for artists. I’m steadily building my client base as of now. My current business model actually combines my personal artistry with my mixing services. I’ve found that my artist releases are almost like a portfolio for my mixing so as my personal music releases, I find new artists in my genre looking for professional mixing services.
What makes you happy?
I personally find the most joy from creative work and progressing on long-term tasks. I do my own video, audio, and photography and all these types of activities are the types of things I can spend hours on end on. I also am extremely passionate about fitness and have been lifting for around five years now. The combination of long-term payoffs and flow state activates are my favorite things.
