Life & Work with Mckenze Trachuk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mckenze Trachuk.

Hi Mckenze, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I became an esthetician over five years ago after following my passion for the beauty industry. It was during esthetics school that I fell in love with body waxing. It is fast-paced and ever-changing, which is the type of challenge I thrive best in. Immediately following school, I worked at a corporate waxing chain for two and a half years. While I enjoyed waxing there, I realized quickly that I was missing out on the community of the beauty world.

It was so much larger than I imagined (thanks to social media), and I felt I could make better and longer-lasting relationships with my clients if I could do things my way. So that is when The Wax Room was born. I started The Wax Room in March 2019 in a one-room suite in surprise, Az by myself with essentially zero clientele. The hustle was real as my husband and I just bought our first house and me deciding to quit a “stable” job and taking the risk of the unknown. I have since become Starpil Wax USA waxing Champion, Hard Wax Instructor for The Waxing Guide and have grown the business from just myself to a team of 4 and a storefront on the way. Despite the challenges of being shut down during Covid March/April 2021, The Wax Room was still begging for growth and expansion. We are still operating out of our little one-room suite and hope to open our storefront location by the end of summer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I always feel like this a loaded question because so many trials and tribulations come to mind immediately. Where do I start? Of course, there are struggles in anything that you do, but I believe your mindset has a lot to do with the outcomes of those bumps in the road. I give myself small, attainable, daily goals every day and I give myself grace if I don’t meet them because major success doesn’t happen overnight. I have had to let go of a lot of fear and control because you can’t wait for things to be “perfect”. They never will be anyway.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Wax Room specializes in full face and body waxing. Our number service is a Brazilian Wax. I believe the thing that sets me and the wax room apart is the attention I give online to our audience and clients. It’s all about the clients, what they need and helping them find the confidence to get waxed. I set myself apart when I started my business by staying true to that aspect, especially with Instagram. So many of my peers were focusing their business on educating other beauty professionals, and I found a white space that needed more love and attention.

We are known for talking about taboo topics when it comes to body waxing, such as having hemorrhoids, a general embarrassment of body hair, being plus size and waxing… the list goes on. We bring attention to those topics, have open conversations about them, and in turn that helps women find that confidence to get waxed. They got the courage because they realize they are not the only ones with the same fears. I am most proud of that that I have been able to maintain my mission of helping people find the confidence to get waxed after two and a half years in business.

Like most beauty professionals, we are creatives first and foremost. So we love getting on Instagram, showing our faces and creating fun and engaging content.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is seeing that smile on my client’s face throughout the service, the connection we make. We literally laugh together, cry together, hype each other up. It’s knowing the impact we have made on their lives just through waxing. I think its important to remember that success does not only equate to the amount of money you make or the amount of followers you have. It’s beyond that, its about your clients/customers and the human connection you make.
