Life and Work with Madison Stevens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Stevens.

Madison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Every bone in my body is a creative one! Well, there must be at least one analytical bone because I am also a full-time pharmacist, but other than that, my passion in life is to create!

Even while growing up I would often fill my time with drawing cartoons, coloring, or building sculptures out of cereal boxes and painting them different colors. Then, when I was in college, a friend’s mom introduced me to the world of cake decorating. It was the perfect hobby – it satisfied my creative appetite and was something I could share with others. It has remained a part of my life for the last decade and has now evolved into Fatty Maddy’s.

I started my side business of Fatty Maddy’s one year ago after 10 years of baking and decorating as a hobby. I made some decorated Christmas sugar cookies for my co-workers and they were a hit! One of those coworkers was my first paying client and I haven’t stopped baking and decorating cookies since! I just love it and can’t believe what it has turned into. I am both so shocked and so proud at the success I’ve had just doing what I love!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Gosh! Who knew running a baking business was going to require more than just baking? I have learned so much about accounting, paying taxes, cottage law, marketing, and social media in the last year than I ever imagined I would; all while also working full time. I often feel like I have no idea what I am doing, yet I somehow figure it all out and am so grateful for the support I have from friends and family who have helped me along the way. Even though it is not always easy, I just feel so content when I am learning and growing. This journey has brought so much fulfillment into my life. The struggle is real, but also so worth it!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fatty Maddy’s Custom Sugar Cookies – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in custom decorated sugar cookies for all kinds of events. My clientele ranges from mom’s ordering cookies for their children’s Pinterest-worthy birthday parties to large businesses and organizations gifting cookies to their clients for special occasions and events. Cookies are great for all causes of celebration or can be even more special when given as a random act of love and kindness.

The possibilities of themes for cookie orders are endless; from elegant logos to children’s storybook characters, to luau themed engagement parties. I love that I never make the same cookies twice. Every order is completely unique to uphold my client’s specific vision. Sometimes, people come up with things that are truly challenging like the intricate details of a dragon which was inspired by a Mahjong tile! To design and achieve a complete set of cookies requires the use of several different techniques and pieces of equipment like my Crucit, projector, and airbrush compressor. It’s amazing how many things can be done with one simple ingredient, sugar.

You can always pick out a Fatty Maddy’s cookie by the intricate details on each one. Each individual cookie takes 5-10minutes to decorate (not including baking and cleaning time). It is extremely time consuming, but the details are my favorite part. They set me apart from other bakers out there and they give the cookies that “wow factor”. I could never deliver cookies without being proud of the final product or knowing that I did my absolute best work.

Building Fatty Maddy’s has been a blessing and a blast. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to do what I love and what brings me joy. After all, what else is life about?

Who have you been inspired by?
There are so many women who have inspired my journey, but here is a couple that immediately pops into my head. As cliche as it sounds, my mom is a huge inspiration to me. She has instilled in me the ability to dream and the work ethic to achieve those dreams. Another is Jenna Kutcher, a self-made millionaire, and entrepreneur. I listen to her podcast every week and learn so much from her journey and all the tips and tricks she shares about becoming an entrepreneur. After reading Becoming by Michelle Obama, I became enchanted by her decision to leave corporate law and follow her heart into the world of non-profit organizations and government. The list goes on and on. I am constantly being inspired by women I see every day on social media, on TV, and in my life. Building my business and living my life is not a solo experience, its collective, and I strive to surround myself with people who will help me continue to grow.
