Life and Work with Jerny Rieves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerny Rieves.

Jerny, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as a student athletic trainer for Football and Baseball in high school. I have always been passionate about athletics, but helping the athletes prevent and rehab injuries was an incredible experience. I went to college with dreams of being an athletic trainer for the NFL, but this was in 1984, and I was told that women would never be welcome and that I should try the new exercise physiology (fitness) program instead. I was crushed but did what was suggested. I received my BS in Ed, with an emphasis in Corporate Fitness in 1989 and quickly worked my way up the management chain in high-end health clubs.

I worked in every position imaginable in health and wellness since that time. I now own a company called Healthworx that works specifically with metabolic disorders in subclinical and clinical middle-age populations.
My goal is to teach people how to take care of their personal health and wellbeing, reduce medications, and increase the overall quality of life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sometimes, I wish that I had fought harder for my dreams. There are still very few female ATC’s in professional sports. I have worked in the “old boys club” since day one. (Many times surprising my colleagues with my professional knowledge and business acumen.) More recently, it has been an age that I have been discriminated for. It is always an uphill battle, but the relationships that I have cultivated and the lives that I have changed have made it all worth it. Advice? Follow your passion, don’t take no as the final answer, and be ready to back yourself up with statistics and facts. You can’t argue logic. Mostly, as I have always told my children, if you want something bad enough, you will figure out a way to get it.

Please tell us about Healthworx.
Healthworx was grown through my passion to see America healthy again. The government and the economy thrive on keeping us sick. Food manufacturers and Big Pharma and “the big M” control the government, and no one makes any money if we don’t need drugs, or eat toxic crap.

My mission is to coach people on how to take control of their health. There are so many ways to prevent disease, and increase the quality of life. Nutrition, exercise, stress management, and mindset are all tools that I teach.

I am most proud of being a product of my knowledge and experience. At age 52, I am leaner than ever. I perform at high levels, and I take zero medications. I have no pain and I feel fantastic. I love teaching others how to achieve this.

What sets me apart from others is: 1. extensive background and experience 2. true compassion for the struggle facing our country today 3. unwavering commitment to a client’s success.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Find people who have what you want. Follow them. Ask questions. Do what they do. Surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams. Remove yourself gently from relationships that do not support your growth.
