Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Marks.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jane. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from Les Roches Hotel Management School in Switzerland in 1991. Not only was it a privilege to attend one of the best professional colleges in the world but the exposure to so many different nationalities and religions has been a great help during my hospitality years.
I started my career at the Athenaeum in London reception. I then entered the world of marketing at Le Cordon Bleu in Marylebone, London. However, I missed hotels and ended up managing boutique hotels in the UK.
Today, I find myself in Scottsdale (have been coming here from the age of 9 and actually attended high school out here my Junior and Senior years) having opened my European café In December 2015.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m not sure anyone’s career or life can be described as smooth. In the beginning, nothing was plain sailing! Working in big hotels is challenging as you come across many folks from different walks of lives. Having attended a well-known establishment lent too a lot of jealousy and sniggering. I had to work just a little bit harder at proving I was one of the team and it wasn’t below me to clean a bedroom or toilet! Being promoted to management brings a whole lot of different skills. People management. A valuable training and lesson.
My advice would be to never be unprepared going into a meeting. Never underestimate the person or people sitting opposite you. Do your homework and make sure you have an understanding of your work place and hierarchy.

Top Marks Café is a European café that is starting to become very well known for our crepes. We also offer gluten free which is appealing to many. We serve sandwiches, crepes, and gelato. The only retail shop able to sell it. You can buy it by the pound or side (already skinned and sliced) or enjoy the product on a bagel or crepe. All meats are hormone and antibiotic free, the eggs are pasteurized and vegetables organic. The gelato is made with all natural products and there are 18 choices to choose from daily including Gluten Free and Vegan. Choices. The coffee is Lavazza… excellent Italian Coffee.
Who have you been inspired by?
I have been inspired by all women past and present who were the first in their field to accomplish progress, to fight for justice, to be the first prime minister etc. Women who dedicate their lives to humanitarian causes. From Amelia Earnhardt, Golda Meier. Margaret Thatcher, Rosa Parks, Indira Gandhi, Maya Angelou, Billie Jean King, etc. These women show that no path is impossible. You can be the best if you dedicate yourself to your path or cause. I try to treat everyone who walks into my café, regardless of where they hail from with respect. I aim to give the best experience possible to all who walk through my doors.
