Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Jones.
Charity, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From the age of 12, I have been braiding hair. It all started from the necessity to keep my own hair braided to the enjoyment of braiding all of my friend’s hair, their families, and then strangers. I decided in 2009 to take things seriously and I began to build my brand-Braids By Charity. Traveling all around the city of Chicago, providing braid services to both men and women. In 2015, I relocated to Arizona. Things took off fairly quickly! I have gained many loyal clients and I’ve had consistent growth in clientele. Right now and for two years, I braid full time. I travel from Arizona to Illinois monthly to provide service to a growing clientele there. I am also a braid instructor and I provide one on one and group sessions to those wanting to acquire this skill.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For me, yes, it has been a smooth road. Braiding is what I am most passionate about and it’s pretty easy to allow the skill to speak for itself. As idea and opportunities reveal themselves, I am able to adjust and move forward from there. My advice for other women is to find what you are most passionate about and trust in yourself and your abilities. You know what you are capable of. Never let anything stop you, just adjust and proceed. Stay in your lane and never allow other people “success” trick you into believing that you are doing something wrong. What’s for you is for you.
Tell us about your business. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a professional Braide/Instructor. I specialize in braiding, but most known for my Crochet Slays. I am most proud of my ability to consistently depend on my business. I am able to do what I love to do full time and I have the flexibility to live as I please. My clients are amazing and I can trust that this is what I will be doing for the rest of my life. What sets me apart from others is my skill. My work speaks for me. Prayerfully, I will only get better.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Women have the ability to make their own way. There are so many things that, as women, are innate to us. The opportunities are endless. Cooking, cleaning, braiding, lashes, eyebrows, babies, etc. find what makes you the happiest and figure out how to monetize it.
