Inspiring Conversations with Nathan McWhirter of Direction Desk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan McWhirter.

Hi Nathan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started when I was personal training and I discovered that 9/10 of my clients, no matter the age or physical condition, needed corrective exercises for tight hip flexors, forward head posture, and lower back pain (all symptoms of excessive sitting).

“Don’t take Advil because you have a rock in your shoe, instead take the rock out”. To me, Standing Desks seemed like a good way to get the rock out of people’s shoes.

Most workspaces today are horrible for posture, energy, and our mental state. This is a big problem considering most people spend 70-80% of their waking lives there. That’s why I’m on a mission to convert all modern workspaces into areas that promote health, productivity, and well-being.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
All roads to success are riddled with obstacles, and my story is no different. Still to this day I go through waves of fear and uncertainty to courage and confidence. I kind of jumped into the fire, because I went from sourcing 30 desks at a time to acquiring 1000 desks and 2000+ accessories in a larger firm’s bankruptcy auction. I had no distribution plan, no packaging plans, no warehouse, no nothing. It was a lot of pressure, and all of a sudden, I had a business that required me to make sales. But with a little bit of luck and hard work, we stayed in business. I was able to sell most of that inventory and I have learned so much along the way. Now I’m looking forward to my next obstacle/learning experience.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Direction Desk curates Wellness with office Furniture. Our product line consists strictly of furniture that makes people healthy and happy: standing desks, monitor arms, wobble stools, footrests, wrist support, and more.

Unlike ergonomic brands of the past, Direction Desk products are designed to look great in a living room. Unfortunately, most ergonomic furniture is ugly, and most beautiful furniture is not ergonomic. Direction Desk is changing that, so you no longer have to sacrifice health for aesthetics and vice versa. Not only will our wellness furniture make you feel amazing, but it will look amazing too.

Our products can be found at directiondesk.com, Amazon, select office furniture dealers, and at our showroom in Gilbert, AZ. In addition, we also provide services such as space planning, design, and custom projects. Our showroom doubles as a Wellspace, where visitors can view and test out our products while sipping a latte from our in-house coffee bar.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Business is a team sport and I would not be anywhere close to where I am now without the help and advice of some great people in my life. My parents are entrepreneurs themselves and have helped in pretty much every way possible. I would not have the confidence I had with starting Direction Desk if I was not able to get so much great experience at their business. My wife, Madison works besides me in Direction Desk and we make company decisions together. She brings a whole heap of positive energy, kindness, and creativity to Direction Desk. Shawn Malkou is my business partner and CMO. He is involved in all strategic decisions for the company. He brings a ton of knowledge, intuition, and marketing skills. In addition to these key people, I often call on many friends and family for help and advice. Specifically: Vince Alves, Colin Bresnahan, Lucciano Gamiz, Danny Pabst, Madison Smith, Angelica Felix, King Burke, Xavier Mendiola, Brandon Kraus, and more have been a huge help for me when I was just starting!
