Meet Natasha Denaxas and Montese Overton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Denaxas and Montese Overton.

Natasha and Montese, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We moved to Phoenix from Seattle in November 2019, right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Not only were we new to the area but it wasn’t exactly an ideal time to look for a job. We had talked for years about starting a company but never really had the time or knew what direction we wanted to go. I was raised in Seattle and both of my parents had grown marijuana for most of my life, and my grandma was always preaching naturopathic approaches to health. Montese was raised in North Carolina and played sports growing up, as well as in college for East Carolina University and briefly for the Seahawks. From my upbringing and the physical toll football took on his body we both had a passion for hemp and how beneficial it can be used when used medicinally and even recreationally, as well as natural holistic remedies.

When COVID hit we decided why not start a CBD company? Almost every company we looked at was a white label company (meaning the products are being made by one company but marketed by another). Which also means that a lot of the products are very similar, just with different labels on them. We decided we wanted to make our own products in small batches with only natural and organic ingredients. We started coming up with recipes, built our website, created labels, and launched Sativa & Sage Co. as a full-spectrum CBD company. We were making the products in my grandparent’s house and my grandmother, Ruth, was our main critic, always giving use great suggestions and ideas of things we could add to our products. CBD products are very much so our passion but with the financial strain of COVID-19, we found that while people (& their pets) were loving our products, that financially, things were hard for many. Being new to Phoenix and not knowing many people, we also had issues getting our name out there.

We started going to markets and also got our products into Happy Daze Smoke Shop, but things were still not going quite as fast as we hoped. Not to mention that places like Amazon, Etsy, and Facebook don’t allow selling or marketing for CBD products. We were banned from Facebook ads (lol) and we started thinking how we can get our name out there? So we decided why not start selling accessories for CBD flowers & marijuana as well? With legalization gaining momentum in many areas, we figured well, if people are smoking marijuana, they will most likely be interested in CBDs as well, and we won’t have to deal with advertising issues. So in April 2021, we began not only selling CBDs but Boujie Bud Accessories as well on Etsy and… now we’re here!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth. Financially with the pandemic, the limits on advertising, as well as quarantine, it was difficult to get our name out there. But even more so we think that the saturation of the market, as well as other companies not being entirely truthful about their products, made things harder as well. We met people at markets or that reached out to us via our website or Instagram saying that they had ordered CBD cream off amazon but didn’t feel any relief and wanted to know what made our products different? What they didn’t realize was that they weren’t buying CBD creams or CBD gummies on Amazon (they don’t allow CBD products to be sold).

They were buying products made with hemp seed oil, which can be found at your local grocery store, it doesn’t have CBDs in it, and it doesn’t have the same benefits as actual CBD oil. So we really had to help educate people about CBDs and how to identify the products that will benefit them. Not just Amazon but we found that other companies also weren’t providing customers with accurate COAs (certificates of analysis), which show not only what is in their CBDs but also whether they are broad-spectrum (with zero THC) or full spectrum (with <.3% THC – the federal legal limit). It was sad to see companies selling products at high prices to people that were making false claims. That’s when we started to really push out our samples, hoping to help show people that there are products our there that can help and that not all CBD products are made the same.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are Sativa & Sage Co., a full-spectrum CBD & boujie bud accessory company! We want to help change the way that the CBD, hemp, and the marijuana industry is viewed. We provide people with affordable, natural, handcrafted, and third-party tested CBD products that raise their quality of life. While also providing unique, quality-made, and expressive accessories that allow our customers to participate in this rapidly growing industry. We may be small, but we are mighty! We pride ourselves on providing quality customer service through connecting with our customers even after a sale is made. We love to educate others about CBDs, hemp, and marijuana while spreading love and positivity to everyone. We hope by being kind, honest, and personable, we can make not only customers but friends!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Part of growth is learning to be uncomfortable. It can be something as small as moving to a new state like we did, or it can be quitting your job to start your side hustle or betting it all on yourself. Without risk, there is no reward. One of our favorite quotes is, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far it is possible to go.” -T.S. Eliot. We believe that risk is everywhere. It’s just as risky to stay at your job as it is to start your own business. We can’t predict how the future will turn out but we do have the ability to choose how we react to it. What’s the worst that could happen? That’s what we like to ask. If it’s something you can learn from and that you can control your reaction to, then why not go for it? You won’t always know how it’s going to turn out but do you want to live always wondering, “what if?”.
