Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Mai Kaga.
Hi Dr. Kaga, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
As the youngest of four sisters- all known as Dr. Kaga- there was no shortage of strong female role models for me, growing up. While other kids were reprimanded for watching too much tv or playing too many video games, my most common offense was sneaking into my bathroom after my bedtime to read my older sisters’ books, too late into the night. My obsession with learning started early and spanned across all subjects. That obsession became a healthy respect for absorbing as much as I could. I developed a muscle of objectivity and perspective, initially through the vantage points of various authors, then eventually as a tool for demonstrating empathy that I now use as perspective to understand my patients. I learned to truly listen, and I never stopped. I graduated college in 2.5 years and pursued my medical career, but my love and fascination with the arts fueled me further into the world of aesthetic medicine. My scientific mind always drew me to the precision of medicine, but I was always looking for a creative outlet for my heart. I wanted to be a pioneer in a field where I could leverage a wealth of scientific knowledge and precision balanced with the empathetic ability to truly enhance beauty. It was this revelation of elevating the patient experience through equal parts precision and artistry that led me to founding The Kaga Academy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle I faced throughout my entire career was me. Knowing that I am able provide what so many patients are looking for- natural, subtle, beautiful enhancements of their own defining characteristics – is very different than taking a leap into something I knew nothing about- business and entrepreneurship. Translating skill as a doctor into a distinctive brand takes a level of courage that, until now, had been foreign to me. In 2021, I took that leap and founded The Kaga Academy of Aesthetic & Concierge Medicine. I led with what I knew best- how to be a good doctor and an even better person. I didn’t have any experience managing a business so I led people instead. Every day, I check in with my employees and ensure that they are fulfilled professionally, mentally, and emotionally coming to work at The Kaga Academy. I conduct each patient interaction with the highest standards of achieving what I originally set out to do- boost my patients’ confidence by giving them an avenue to improve, but not change, how they look.
I owe my confidence to so many people around me. My parents, who always nurtured my love for art, but always pushed me to my highest potential knowing exactly what I was capable of before I knew it myself. My husband, who when I said I wanted to open my own business, with a two-year-old and a six-month-old, in the middle of a pandemic, simply said, “it’s about time”. Mostly though, I thank my patients for helping me overcome the only true obstacle in my path, the belief that perhaps I was redundant, and not needed. It is their endless gratitude that reminds me we do need pioneers with the vision that people are beautiful and enhancing that beauty means truly enhancing- not changing, who we are.
We’ve been impressed with The Kaga Academy of Aesthetic & Concierge Medicine, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My signature approach amplifies each patient’s unique beauty and confidence by enhancing their most defining features. We strive to celebrate what makes each person distinct. I personalize and curate my treatment plans specifically to meet each client’s needs and wants. I conduct my consultations by listening first and developing a comprehensive treatment plan that caters to the patient as a whole. I never start by telling a patient how I can make them “more beautiful.” One of the most common things I say to my patients is, we can change this, but if it doesn’t bother you, it doesn’t bother me. I never want to be in the business of “correcting” someone’s natural beauty. My business means we build your confidence by enhancing the beauty you had all along.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I founded the The Kaga Academy of Aesthetic & Concierge Medicine based on two things. First, elevating the patient experience, by combining the expertise of precision medicine with the artistry and innovation of aesthetics. Secondly, educating our patients that just because you want to change something about yourself doesn’t mean you want to look like anyone other than you. With our highly personalized approach, we specialize in providing the most advanced treatments & cutting-edge techniques to deliver results that are effective yet natural. Our signature approach focuses on delivering cross-category results by combining different treatments like botox, dermal fillers, lasers, IPL, radiofrequency, and microneedling to bring about the latest technology in enhancing your natural features.
I tell my patients if you want an over-the-top, unrecognizable look, I can recommend a lot of great doctors.
