Inspiring Conversations with Katie Yaeli of The Play District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Yaeli.

Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, and moved to Tucson in 2004 to attend the University of Arizona. I graduated in 2008 (an extremely difficult year to graduate) with a degree in Retail and Consumer Sciences. My boyfriend (now husband) received a job offer in Tucson so we decided to stay and I continued in an expanded role at Starbucks. I soon pivoted to the Spa and Hospitality industry in 2011 and was laid off in 2012. I took this opportunity to start up an e-commerce business which I have had since 2013 and am still doing a bit today. From then on, I got the entrepreneurial bug and have been coming up with creative business ideas ever since!

Now as a mom of 2 young boys, I am constantly looking for new and exciting things to do. I love exploring our city and traveling to new cities as a family. Through our explorations, I realized there were minimal resources that had the information we were looking for or needed. For instance, looking for something to do, or somewhere to eat as a family became a chore of combing through websites and reviews to see if it would be appropriate for our family of 4. That is how The Play District was born!

I started out simply looking to be a good resource to our community and realized that I cannot do it on my own. That is why we are a resource based on input from our community. We are all about supporting local businesses, services, and the community. We look forward to opening The Play District in cities across the nation.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not easy! Beyond basic social media marketing associated with my e-commerce business, digital media is a whole new thing for me. I think this industry is also a learning process, as things are constantly changing and improving. I am the kind of person who takes everything on, so with a business like this, I am relying on my community members and website designers to help bring my vision to life and be an amazing resource to our cities.

I look at all these struggles or disappointments as learning experiences that will help me build my brand and give back to the community.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Play District is a grassroots resource and media company dedicated to providing quality, relevant, family-friendly content for YOU.

Whether you currently live in one of our districts, or you are planning to visit or even relocate there, we want to be the local perspective you can trust.

When you come to The Play District- our website, social media, or an event- here is what you can always expect:

No reviews. We curate content and information so that you can make the best decisions for your family. Listings are sourced by other local families. We are always looking for new spots to list, and new information to add to our listings. We want to keep our content fresh and relevant to provide you with the best information possible.

Free. It is important to us at The Play District to provide an accessible resource to local communities.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We are currently up and running in Tucson and are looking for someone to run our Phoenix account starting in 2023.

We already have a social media account going (@theplaydistrict_phoenix), but are looking for a District Director to be in charge of the Phoenix District. This would be their own business, so it is a very exciting opportunity for entrepreneurs looking for an opportunity to support their families while spending more time exploring their city.
