Inspiring Conversations with Erica Williams of Bold Emotional Colorful

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Williams.

Hi Erica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
“Lifestyle photographers should be recognized for their hard work and credited for their accomplishments. I started BEC (Bold, Emotional, Colorful) because I felt like an outsider in most photography groups.

I wanted to create a space where all photographers could share their work and gain the recognition they deserve. Art is subjective, but we all wear that fear of rejection on our shoulders every day. Our work is a piece of who we are, a glimpse into our souls. You should have a safe place to share our accomplishments.” – Erica Williams from BEC Magazine Spring Issue.

I started my own photography business back in 2008 photographing families, newborns, weddings, and seniors. Starting a photography business is not easy as you think. It takes money, time, and hard work. You can have really great work but maybe not know about branding and marketing and your business not take off.

You have to wear many hats as a photographer. You are your business. I wish I had the resource there are today back when I started my business. I had to learn from trial and error.

Through my 14 years of experience, I have grown to really love the photography community. I have met some of the most amazing people. I wanted a safe place for all artists to begin and experience. A supportive place for photographers of all levels. I wanted a place to offer affordable education and opportunities to be featured.

We offer online courses, mentorships and we just launched our first issue of BEC Magazine! Our very talented, BEC Leaders, are the face of the BEC community and create all the educational content we provide.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The BEC platform was launched a few years ago but it failed to have the correct structure to set it up for success.

I think that is the most important part of starting a business. You need support, a plan, and the correct structure. Without these things, your business is destined to fail. The best thing to do is to learn from your failure and try again and that is exactly what I did.

Now, with the correct partners, BEC has grown by leaps and bounds after launching in July of 2021. We have almost been in business for a year and our platform has tripled in size. We started out as just an Instagram hub sharing other work as inspiration. Now we are a fully functioning educational platform.

BEC has grown like a wildfire and has a great future ahead. We now have almost 30K Instagram followers and 20K followers on Facebook.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bold Emotional Colorful?
Bold, Emotional, Colorful is a photography platform and community. We offer online courses, mentorships, an online forum, and a Magazine for the BOLD photographer.

There are other photography platforms out there that mainly focus on mom-togs or women in general. Our platform focuses on lifestyle photographers of all kinds women and men. We celebrate beautiful, colorful artwork. We accept only a few elite photographers a year as BEC Leaders who are the face of our platform. BEC Leaders are able to create content, online courses, mentorships, and write articles for our BEC Magazine.

I am most proud of the group of leaders here at BEC. They are extremely talented and represent the BEC brand. If I were to say one thing about our brand, it would be that we are very supportive of the photography community. I hope that everyone feels welcome and that this is a place where they can grow as artists.

What matters most to you? Why?
Our community as a whole matter the most.

Without our supportive community, BEC would simply not exist. We are always trying to find ways to improve and help our community. We want to provide the best educational content and a safe place to share their work and receive feedback. A place to connect with other artists.

That is why we opened up the BEC community forum on our website and have a close-knit Facebook group.
