Inspiring Conversations with-Annie-and-Selah-of-Sonoran-Picnics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonoran Picnics.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When COVID hit, it was especially difficult to get out of the house with nothing open. One weekend, I (Annie) thought it would be fun to put some pillows and blankets in the trunk and go up north with my husband for a picnic. By the time I gathered all of the ingredients for a charcuterie spread, tried keeping it cool while finding a picnic spot, and then spent time organizing it on the board, it felt silly taking Instagram photos with the complete mess I had left out of the frame. It was a lot of work behind the scenes, and I thought of how nice it would have been to be able to just walk right up to a picture-perfect picnic without the hassle. I took this idea to Selah, and the rest is history!

We were both looking for a creative outlet—we each have careers in the helping field—and summertime quarantine provided a lot of free time for us to start dreaming up ideas for Sonoran Picnics. We are best friends, so it was easy and natural to spend plenty of time together to work through the logistics. Launching in October 2020 was perfect as the weather cooled down, and it has been so exciting to navigate each new adventure this business has provided!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have been blown away by the positive response to our business from the start—our first week, we set up an elopement picnic in Sedona! We are so unbelievably thankful for all of the support we’ve received and have enjoyed a steady flow of picnic requests since our launch just over eight months ago. One of the biggest hurdles to overcome, like in any profession, is determining a work/life balance. Each of us has our other careers and families, so we had to learn over the past year how to spend our time wisely and balance our friendship with being business partners. Thankfully, we still have our weekly game nights sans Sonoran Picnic conversation!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We started Sonoran Picnics to create beautiful experiences for people to enjoy with the people they love. Primarily, we set up our luxury picnics in an outdoor space to soak in the breathtaking views available all around the Phoenix valley! One of the things that set us apart is our desire to incorporate other small businesses and their passions into our picnics. We love working with local photographers, artists, Airbnbs, food vendors, florists, etc. to ensure each picnic is unique and specially curated for each of our picnickers!

Our original food boards stand out as we have a diverse selection that we carefully craft ourselves for each and every picnic. These boards feature complementary elements (we think of everything: texture, color, size, taste) and come in varieties like sweet and salty, brunch, and veggie. Don’t get us wrong, we love classic charcuterie and it is our most popular selection, but these other options are also beloved by our guests.

We are constantly looking for new ways to support other local merchants. For example, we are introducing Sonoran Picnics Favors in the fall; these will feature products made here in the valley, such as fresh bread, raw honey, and jam. This is perfect for anyone hosting a picnic wanting favors for their guests.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Connect with us on Instagram, @sonoranpicnics! We are constantly introducing new options for our guests, and this summer we are working on lots of fun additions for the Fall! We love sharing our picnic setups with you and engaging our community because we truly believe this isn’t just a business. Seeing guests’ faces light up at the sight of their picnic and hearing our picnickers rave about their experience with us just fuels our desire to keep bringing people joy!
