Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Woodiwiss.
Hi Amy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We are dogs! We are a niche small business catering to the large Bully Breeds but to be honest, we see just as many small dogs as we do large! From Poodles to Presa’s and everything in between. Have you ever taken your dog to a retail location or local business? Depending on what breed of dog you have, you may get different reactions. We take pride in welcoming ALL breeds – from pets to working or service animals and show dogs we have something unique for any sort of furry friend. You won’t see any side eye or fear from us or our employees.
We started out breeding American Pitbull Terriers back in 2003 and have had bully breeds our entire lives which has given us so much experience in the field. We both worked corporate jobs most of our lives and at some point, we both decided that while we were grateful for our careers, it wasn’t super fulfilling work and it was time to take our future into our own hands.
In January 2020, we went all in and looking back on how 2020 shook out globally, I think we took a bigger leap than we initially thought and we took over The Pitbull Store. We started with the existing location and began building. We did minor improvements to the facility, expanding services to include anyone from first-time dog owners to experienced breeders and everyone in between with a focus on hard to find items and affordable premium nutrition and care all wrapped up in a place you WANT to bring your dog – and someone is always there answering any and all questions.
Aside from our retail locations and online presence, our community is important to us. Dogs are important to us. Once a quarter, we donate a pallet of food to a local shelter in need. Crates and miscellaneous goods when there are emergency situations, back to school events and more. This is our community and giving back is always on the top of our list. Dogs have given us the world and we will continue to take care of them in every way we can.
We also support and attend all registries and travel the united states attending dog shows which has allowed us to connect to the Bully Community – We are so grateful. This has been our dream for a long time. I don’t know what the future will hold, what opportunities will come next but we will continue to be ALL GAS and no BREAKS!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been challenges along the way. I don’t think anyone can become successful without trial and error. If something comes up or falls through, you have to have the ability to adapt and problem solve. I would say pretty early on with the pandemic, there was a lot of fear of the unknown. People were scared so we weren’t sure how our new business would survive and thrive. I am happy to report we have the best customers in the entire world this I am sure of. Our community rallied around us, became loyal customers and have supported us through it all.
A unique challenge for us has been doing so many things we have never done before in a short amount of time. Finding new vendors, turnaround times, opening multiple locations, navigating a pandemic, becoming wholesalers, building websites and growing our social media platforms and the list could go on. We have a motto here…’We will figure it out.’ If that isn’t the most honest statement, I don’t know what is.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a niche small business offering: Luxury Supplies – Gold Chains, Designer Gear like LV Collars and so much more.
Nutrition – Premium Dog Food, Supplements and Raw offerings
Health – Vaccines, Deworming products, Care and hydration products, wound care, skin and coat items
Training Supplies and Handling – We offer hard to find Working dog gear, Show Ring Supplies and one on one classes
You should know that we will answer a question with a question – for instance, this is a common one ‘How do I get my dog big?’ – Our answer will be ‘How old is your dog?’ We do this for many reasons, we want to make recommendations that fit your needs and not push you into the latest and greatest new thing but the health of the dog is our number one concern. If you were to ask our customers what sets us apart – it is our Customer Service and hard to find supplies.
As a whole, we are most proud about our loyal customers referring people they know to our business. We take a lot of pride in the fact that they are trusting us to take care of them. Additionally, with the help of our website and social media, we are able to be available to our customers round the clock.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Okay, so I think this is funny – myself and one of our newer employees were working the sales floor, stocking and talking about nothing of note and he said ‘Imagine being mad working here when you get to see puppies everyday.’ Umm, wow! That in a nutshell, makes me HAPPY!
Seeing dogs every day, answering questions about dogs, playing with dogs that come into the store, helping new dog owners, dripping out a badass dog in his new gear, posting amazing dogs to our socials, sharing dog meme’s…..I could go on but pretty much DOGS!
