Inspiring Conversations with Amara Leggett of A Young Legend and Dual Enrollment Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amara Leggett.

Hi Amara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was in 8th grade, I attended a meeting about the relaunch of the Dual Enrollment program in Ohio. I was interested in the opportunity presented to me, so I enrolled in my first college classes during my freshman year of high school. I entered high school with 7 credits completed as a result of attending a STEM junior high school, which gave me a chance to select additional classes.

Eventually, I realized I could receive dual credit for my college classes and graduate from both institutions early. After 2 years of taking mostly college classes during the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters I received my Associate of Science degree 10 days after my high school diploma at 16 years old.

My last year as a Dual Enrollment student, I launched a blog to document my experiences as a early graduate interested in business and technology. I decided to continue my education at a 4-year university with a major in Computer Science. While I was pursuing my Bachelor’s degree I grew my business, A Young Legend.

In 2018 I delivered a TEDx Talk about how to develop a plan and make the impossible possible. Once I exited the stage I was presented a job offer and a large amount of speaking requests. This event launched my speaking career and jumpstarted my tech experience at 17 years old. I have the honor of traveling around the country speaking at schools, conferences, and corporations.

Then, in October of 2018, I released “The Strategic Mind of A Young Legend” to share how I built a successful personal brand around early graduation. As I approached my last year in college, I also launched the Dual Enrollment Company to help students graduate early and debt-free with Dual Enrollment. In December of 2020, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at 19 years old.

Now, I am a software engineer and entrepreneur. At the Dual Enrollment Company, we just launched our collection featuring The Dual Enrollment Planner.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has not been a smooth road. The biggest struggle was ensuring that I was able to receive my diploma and degree at 16. A few weeks after I graduated, I was expected to move across the country and attend my new college for the upcoming semester.

Everything had to be aligned. The classes and college credits needed to match up with the Associate of Science degree. The classes, credits, volunteer hours, as well as the cap and gown also needed to be perfect. During my last semester at my community college, I was also taking the highest amount of college credits I had experience with to make sure I graduated on time.

Since then, most of my struggles are regarding business operations, partnerships, inventory, etc.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about A Young Legend and Dual Enrollment Company?
A Young Legend is my personal brand. I offer public speaking and consultation services on the topics of how I graduated college at 16, becoming a software engineer, and building a personal brand. I also sell “The Strategic Mind of A Young Legend” to individuals, schools, corporations, etc.

I am most proud of the number of people I have inspired. I keep in contact with everyone who I have worked with and I love hearing how I empowered them to pursue a certain path in their life. I want people to know not only is age just a number, but you can make the impossible possible if you make a plan. I am an example of that.

The Dual Enrollment Company is an education company that creates content, digital tools, products, and services to help students graduate early and debt free with Dual Enrollment. Our most popular offerings is our Dual Enrollment Near You search engine for students to search Dual Enrollment in their country, state/province, and school, Dual Enrollment GPA Calculator, and The Dual Enrollment Planner. We are servicing the gaps in the program to ensure students are successful and maximize the benefits and opportunities. There are a handful of companies that specialize in Dual Enrollment, but we are the only company to focus on the students and address how Dual Enrollment can be found in the United States, Canada, The Bahamas, Morocco, India, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, etc. I am most proud of how the Dual Enrollment Company works with students and their families in addition to high schools, colleges, other Dual Enrollment focused organizations.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I attended a public middle school and high school while I attended college. Most people assume my intelligence and advancement in education would have come from attending a private school. I am proud of attending a public school because I can show that anyone can graduate early.

Another surprising fact is that I did not receive any outside scholarships to use for my 4-year degree. I applied for scholarships while I was in high school and college. I did receive a small scholarship from donors who donate to students at my 4-year university the month I graduated. Most people also assume that I would have received a full ride due to my GPA and education accomplishments.
