Hidden Gems: Meet Thomas Nasser-Taylor of New Haven Communities

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Nasser-Taylor.

Hi Thomas, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We launched New Haven Communities a Behavioral Health Residential Facility for adolescent boys and girls this year in 2022. I left the corporate job that I was at for about six years, I was mentally burnt out. I did not know what I was going to do, I just knew I had to leave that job, at this time COVID was really bad and it was taking a huge toll on my mental health.

My sister Amber had recently opened her Behavioral Health Residential Facilities, where I started working for her and learning and understanding the business, and how mental health is honestly so real. Mental health is just something we are not used to talking about, I myself was afraid to talk about my struggles with mental health. My sister Amber threw out the idea that maybe I should open a Behavioral Health Residential Facility, at the time I was fresh out of my old job and was not sure what I wanted to do.

I later decided to invest all of my time in learning and doing research, with her support and guidance in some of the business areas. After getting married to my now husband and the birth of our daughter, I knew I had to get in gear and invest in myself and my future. We started the process and launched New Haven Communities in early 2022.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
To say it was a smooth road would be a lie. When you are an employee and learning the business is one thing, when you are an owner/operator there are many more avenues that you have to become familiar with and learn.

We were delayed for months just to become compliant with paperwork before licensing. We had no idea how insurance works as a provider and you literally have to get out there and network just to become known in the community.

We’ve been impressed with New Haven Communities, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What we hope for New Haven Communities is that we can reach the youth and make a difference in their lives and be a part of their healing process. We are proud to also serve LGBTQI+ youth and provide that support where they can process their traumas and heal in a safe judgment-free environment.

Mental Health struggles are a very scary place to be alone and we hope to remind our clients that they are not in this alone and together we will get through it.

What matters most to you?
What matters most is that we stay focused and know what our mission is, and that is making a positive impact on our clients who may not know what support is or what it looks like to have positive support.
