Hidden Gems: Meet Joia Cook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joia Cook.

Hi Joia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
In 2015, I started a personal styling and fashion blog as a hobby. Craving a creative outlet from my stressful 9 – 5 at the time, I purchased a Canon and MacBook and had some fun.

A year later, I was a featured blogger for an entertainment website where I got a lot of questions about how to shop and style pieces. Once realizing the need, I began researching and found personal styling to be the answer.

The first several styling opportunities I had were as a wardrobe stylist for photo and video shoots. Eventually, I began working one-on-one with clients for more personal needs (vacation, events, closet refresh, etc).

Over the next four years, I continued working full-time as I made slow, but steady, progress with personal styling. In July of last year, I officially launched my styling business as a part-time entrepreneur!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been the smoothest road at all. The biggest thing I’ve struggled with along the way was being confident in myself. God has always presented me with the right people and opportunities at the right time, but I didn’t fully believe in my craft until recently. Also, I never quit working a full-time job, so managing my energy between the two is challenging.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Joia Monet LLC?
I am a personal and wardrobe stylist. The personal styling services I currently offer are closet revamp/editing, personal shopping, and virtual styling. As a wardrobe stylist, I work with brands and models to help bring their visions to life.

When you are performing any service, I believe it is important that your client feels valued. There is a big difference between telling someone what to wear and teaching someone different ways to wear it. I want to walk into each session feeling trusted and leave knowing that everyone involved was included!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The sunsets are breathtaking! I will also never get over the mountains (that I can see at a distance from my bedroom window). Having lived here for 15 years, I’m only recently witnessing some growth in the art scene and a sense of diverse community between creatives and small business owners. It’s been a slow journey.
