Today we’d like to introduce you to Breeanya Hinkel.
Hi Breeanya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
During the summer of 1999, I left my hometown of Prescott, AZ with a graphic design certificate and trailer full of belongs to head across the country – north to North Dakota. Following my heart (a boy) and a dream. I started my career in graphic design at age 19 in Minot, ND at the Minot Daily News while attending Minot State University studying design and marketing.
After two, cold and interesting years in Minot – with a bit of heartbreak and avoiding frostbite. I came back to Prescott, AZ and began working at a local printing company, EMI PrintWorks, heading up their pre-press and graphic design departments. I worked at the print shop for 6 years before being approached by a local magazine, Prescott Woman Magazine, to be their layout and ad designer. I quickly jumped on that opportunity and jumped right into it at the start of 2008.
I worked for the magazine and did freelance graphic design and website design for 10 years as BJH Designs before taking over ownership of the publication in 2018. I have worked as publisher, owner, and creative director of Prescott Woman Magazine for three years. The publication in itself has been in Prescott for 17 years and has survived both the recession and the pandemic.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road – but what is in life! Being a part of a print publication has normal struggles which include printing quality, maintaining advertisers, and growing subscribers. Plus there is always new competition that appears. Other struggles include working through the recession and then the 2020 pandemic and navigating working with fellow businesses that have their own hardships.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about BJH Publishing?
Both BJH Designs, a graphic and website design company, and Prescott Woman Magazine are owned by Breeanya Hinkel as BJH Publishing.
BJH Designs specializes in logo, print design, and WordPress-based websites. We have been in business for 13 years and it was through freelancing that I got involved in publication design.
Prescott Woman Magazine is a community-based publication that prints bi-monthly (6 issues per year). We proudly feature women’s stories in a variety of themes. Including health, education, business, adventure, etc. Being able to locally own and operate a magazine in my hometown has been amazing. We are Prescott’s premier publication and have been featuring local women for 17 years. During COVID we also started our own podcast – Prescott Woman Podcast as an avenue to tell even deeper stories and feature both our cover stories and non-profits.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice is if you find your passion – to follow it! I have loved the idea of graphic design since I was a kid and every career has different paths, but if you find your passion it isn’t hard to take the journey.
