Exploring Life & Business with Nikki Steele of Nikki Steele Style

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Steele.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The reason behind NIKKI STEELE STYLE started way back in high school – I styled my friends and family with perfectly curated merchandise all the time. Our past-time was shopping on the weekends and then ending our day with dinner y discussing our finds for the day, plus discussing whatever else was happening in our world.

I know, it seems superficial, but it wasn’t at all. This is how we stayed connected and understood we were part of something greater y bigger than ourselves. Being the youngest of seven- it was tough sometimes to be seen, heard, y feel empowered, but here, on these shopping sprees I was seen, heard, y felt empowered! There were so many possibilities I could see in everybody. Also, y most importantly- I had fun. We had fun! These were some of my favorite times!

Times where I learned a lot of life lessons from my Mother and Grandmother (the Fashionista of ALL Fashionistas – I will have to tell YOU about Dayton’s story, but not here. Styling, encouraging, empowering y cheering on others was then, y is today my superpower. By keeping my roots y superpowers in mind, I played with the idea to start my own business while staying home to raise our bonito son.

Finally, after 13 years of being a sales executive for the chemical/pharmaceutical industries, I decided to retire. That’s when the magic happened y NIKKI STEELE STYLE was born!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road, but I would say the majority of the road has been fun, exciting, and fulfilling. Some of the bumps in the road had to do with managing my time between starting my business and home and family life. Typical bumps we all have in our life- finding that balance.

What is great about owning a business that you are passionate about, is that most of the time it doesn’t feel like work. You get in a zone and you lose track of time. That can get you in trouble too- so again it’s setting a calendar, goals, and timelines with boundaries is key. Besides balance, another obstacle is the days when you are running on low and wondering if what you’re doing is really making a difference. Are people really connecting with you?

Are you making this world a better place? On those days, when you question this, it can be tough- but what is interesting, a day or two after wondering if you are making a difference- I’ll get a phone call, text, or direct message telling me how they are staying inspired and love what we are doing at Nikki Steele Style.

Also, a new opportunity seems to always arise after these bumps in the road. Experiencing these rhythms of business helps me through the struggles as I know better things are always ahead.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I loved styling and helping friends and family with fashion. (See the first question about how my business came to be).

I was the youngest of 7 so I definitely had a lot of love and support all around me. I was very fortunate and lucky that way. This allowed me to be confident in who I was and express that in any way possible and I did this mainly through my style and fashion. See what we did on the weekends from the first question.

I also loved to create in all types of ways- my mother was always finding fun crafts for us to do for the holidays, and we had this ice cream pail of crayons she would get out and that would entertain us for hours. We also, baked and cooked with her in the kitchen. We were brought up in a very creative and loving environment and this set the stage for my love of color, fashion, style, and creating something out of nothing.

My mother, Mary Bernel, has always inspired me to be my own person, do good, know that familia y friends are the highest priority, and support all, but especially women y the underdogs in life. Mom is always cheering me on in everything I do. How lucky am I?! Mom is the truly Thee Ultimate Pineapple!
