Exploring Life & Business with Melissa DiTaranto of Level Up Performance and Rehab LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa DiTaranto.

Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small country town in Massachusetts. I have had a passion for sports and exercise since I was young. I was active, played outside, and did multiple sports and activities throughout my childhood.  I have been interested in the medical field for as long as I remember and followed that path throughout my life. After graduating with my Bachelors in Exercise Physiology/Kinesiology, my love for health, science, fitness, sports performance, and recovery catapulted me into starting a home-based fitness business. A few years later, I returned to graduate school to expand my knowledge and get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  I took as many opportunities as I could to learn and expand my career. When a teaching opportunity at the University of Massachusetts Boston fell upon me, I found a passion for teaching. I continued to teach multiple classes in the Exercises and Heath Science Department for the next 9 years and worked as a full-time clinician in an orthopedic/sports clinic in Boston. A year after I moved out to Arizona, I felt I wanted something more and started Level Up Performance and Rehab LLC in Nov 2018.

On a more personal note:
Sports, strength and conditioning, and exercises have always been a part of me. It is my escape that provides me tranquility, energy, and competition. It allows me to push myself, test my limits, fails, and conquer. Playing multiple sports through high school and playing soccer around the world allowed me to gain more respect and devotion to learning more about improving sports performance and recovery. After college, I craved competition and did fitness competitions for years. I have continued my passion for sports competition by continuing to compete in USA Track and Field Masters Division and have been able to represent the USA proudly.

I take pride in my work because I understand an injury’s impact on a person. I want to make it easier to recover, both physically and mentally, and help people return to their lives and their passions. I also want to support young people and help them actualize their potential. I want to set a good example for the youth and show them how hard work, dedication, responsibility, integrity and accountability are characteristics that will further you in life in whatever they decide to do.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
I have had obstacles and challenges like any business, but the journey has taught me so much. I have worked very hard to overcome anything that comes my way. Struggles include finding time to add patients into my full schedule so that they can get optimal care and having time to continue to train myself for good health and optimal performance. Another struggle has been in regard to expansion of my business.  Finding the right time and location has been delayed due to capital. However, I have adjusted and improved my vision so the expansion can start shortly.

We’ve been impressed with Level Up Performance and Rehab LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Physical Therapist and Strength and Conditioning coach. I have a travel cash-based business where I go to your home (within my geographical limits) and do rehabilitation and recovery for clients. This includes any combination of treatment options that I feel is best for that individual after my evaluation. I perform an evaluation that includes medical history, mechanism of injury strength, range of motion, joint mobility, and flexibility assessments, in addition to assessing functional movement patterns and other pertinent information. We talk about goals and our plan to get there. Treatments may include scraping, cupping, dry needling, trigger point release, soft tissue work, stretching and mobility work, mobilizations and manipulations, and exercises that will supplement the manual work done so optimal benefit is obtained. Some clients come to me for recovery work after hard practices/games/meets to be at their best for performance in their sport. Although most of my clientele are athletes or former athletes, I see any age and activity level, and my scope goes into all orthopedics and sports injuries.

What sets me apart from others is that I can spend an hour with you in the comfort of your own home. Because it is a cash-based business and I don’t need a referral or have to follow the insurance companies’ rules, I am more able to evaluate and treat multiple body parts. I can work on the body as a system for optimal performance and can assess movement patterns and limitations that need to be addressed

What’s next?
My plans include expanding my business to a brick-and-mortar clinic focusing on rehabilitation, recovery, strength and conditioning, and overall health.
