Exploring Life & Business with Landrey Karger of Le Pain de Vie Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Landrey Karger.

Hi Landrey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband was diagnosed with severe gluten intolerance about 4 years ago. I had never made anything gluten-free, and I had absolutely no idea where to begin.

I started reading books, blogs, recipes, and anything I could to figure out how to start cooking and baking with this new lifestyle change. I would search through Pinterest daily trying new recipes, and most of them failed.

I decided to take a new approach and learn more from a scientific perspective about how good would react with each other. After many, many, many failed recipes, I finally began to see results.

I started baking for friends and family, neighbors, and my husband’s coworkers. We began to realize how many people too suffered from food allergies as we did. Through the encouragement of all these people, I decided to try and use this knowledge to provide baked goods and pastries for this new community that we had.

So from there, I started Le Pain de Vie Bakery, which means the bread of life, it comes from one of my favorite verses in the Bible, John 6:35. Jesus says that he is the bread of life. The eternal satisfaction to our souls.

I desired to bring food into the people’s lives around me who miss out at parties or getting coffee with a friend. Because there wasn’t an option for them or at least a good one. I think people feel loved and cared for when they see things like vegan or gluten-free options. Because to most, it isn’t even a thought.

They go out and eat wherever they want because they don’t have an allergy. But when someone with that allergy sees a little gluten-free sign in the bakery display they feel loved and thought of. That is the best part! Seeing my pastries in the hands of a little kid who normally would be told “I’m sorry, we don’t have that”

Now we are serving lots of coffee shops and Cafes in the East Valley. Spreading that joy and love to lots of people.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been easy. I have a husband and two beautiful kids at home. And so it takes a lot of sacrifices… A lot of working in the middle of the night, or waking up hours before anyone else to get the work done thought the day.

Gluten-free and vegan ingredients are also significantly more expensive than their regular counterparts! We try very hard to keep everything we make at a reasonable price so that people can afford to enjoy them!

But as grocery store prices have inflated it has definitely become more and more difficult.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am very proud of every item we have on our menu.

It has taken years for some of these recipes to be perfected and I take great pride in that. I want people to feel that love and time that went to every pastry we put out. It’s how we love people. We know that our pastries and bread are special for our customers because they are gluten-free or vegan. You can’t find those options everywhere. Or they aren’t very good.

Our business is founded on loving the people around us well and serving our community! It’s our core value as a Christian business to love people through what we do. We want every customer experience to feel that. That they are loved and thought of before they even purchase it.

We want our pastries to bless the people that enjoy them!

How do you define success?
Success has not been merely monetary for me.

There were times that we were making more money but I didn’t feel as successful as I do now. We are continually bettering ourselves. Pushing to make things better, find different options, and adjust our recipes to be more cost-effective for our customers.

I’m not comparing my success to the other bakeries around me. I’m just focusing on being better than I was last year, month, or even week.
