Exploring Life & Business with Harsimran Kaur of Sim Simplified

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harsimran Kaur.

Hi Harsimran, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a professional organizer and declutter coach. Years ago, when I got my first job and started making money, I enjoyed shopping quickly because of addition and my favorite pastime. Scrolling through Groupons and Amazon prime became my go-to things to do when I was bored. I started accumulating things I didn’t need but thought I did. I was packing to move into an apartment closer to work, and while packing, I had a moment of clarity when I realized I had SOO many clothes and items that I didn’t even use. I was spending money on clothes and Knick knacks that were adding no value to my life. All this shopping led me to rack up a credit card debt of 20k when I was 24! I started questioning my choices and the trajectory my life was going in if I didn’t change my ways. At that moment, I decided to get rid of my debt. I was going to do that by cutting out mindless, useless shopping. I stopped using my credit card, solely relied on my debit card for a year, started cooking at home instead of going out to eat, and started hanging out at home playing board games with my friends instead of going out. Making these simple changes allowed me to pay off my credit card debt within a year and eliminate all the clutter (physical and mental)!

During that whole year, I started thinking a lot about decluttering. I adopted practices like sharing instead of buying if the item is only needed a few times, I started buying more mindfully and didn’t rush into saying yes to an item that caught my attention. I also started getting rid of things I didn’t need or use; I passed them down to friends/family or donated them. By the end of the year, I had paired down quite a bit, but I was also much happier, freer, and joyful. I had more time, and my space felt so open and breathable. It felt like lifting a weight off my shoulders.

This journey of decluttering my belongings and finances was so impactful that I wanted to share it with everyone and help others! I realized how we live in a consumerist society, how easy it is to buy things, and how we choose convenience because it’s easy.

I did not realize professional Organizing and decluttering was a career choice until I created my Instagram page! I wanted to help millennial women enjoy the benefits of a decluttered lifestyle, which is when Sim Simplified was born. I was so excited to see others also teaching and helping people get their lives organized, and for me, that was a sign that there was a need for this.

I went full-time in my business in April of 2022, and I am excited to keep growing as a business and helping people evolve their lives. Seeing my clients have their aha moments and their spaces transformed is amazing.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. The first struggle was always my family not understanding this business and referring to it as a cleaning business. It took a year of watching me and seeing the transformations for it to click. Another difficult thing is learning how to run a business, market to the right audience, and gain visibility. My people are out there waiting for me to show up! It is easy to feel like a failure when things don’t happen quickly, so it is a constant reminder that everything takes time. Just like decluttering and organist don’t happen ins a day and takes work, so does growing a business.

As you know, we’re big fans of Sim Simplified. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a professional organizer and declutter coach. I declutter and organize for busy folks or folks that do not know how and where to start and what to do when it comes to decluttering and Organizing. I also teach people how to declutter and stay organized through mindset shifts, daily routines, systems, and habits. I understand that decluttering for someone can be very intrusive, and people have shame around their homes and items, so I make sure to go with a heart full of kindness and no judgment. I love what I do, am very empathetic, and do not bring justice to the table because I have been in my client’s shoes for years! It is very important for them to feel comfortable with me so we can talk through their clutter accumulation habits.

My goal is always to solve the root of the clutter problem or bring it to light to my clients so they have clarity and can work towards changing that. I offer in-person services where I do most of the work regarding hands-on decluttering and Organizing. I also offer virtual and hybrid services where I teach people and provide detailed plans. There is also an option of hands-on time with me for these services. I am working on creating offers for millennial women who feel like their lives are in disarray and need some structure. This will be a group program where a woman from different walks of life in the same boat can get a sense of Community, and I will mentor them from feeling like a hot mess to no stress. I aim to give people the tools to create happy, organized, joyful lives. In the event of life-changing moments when life gets overwhelming and disorganized, you can use these tools and resources to calibrate and reorganize your life.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Yes! We all need mentors and coaches. Time is the only currency in life and saving time and sanity by investing in a coach is truly invaluable. For example, if you go to Walmart and need to buy one thing but don’t know where it is, you spend 30 minutes searching through every aisle looking for the items, wasting your time. Instead, find an employee and ask them; they will lead you directly to the item you need to buy. You save yourself time and sanity! Coaches and mentors do the same thing for us. Sometimes we. We even reach out to people in our network to help, guide, and give us perspective. If we work alone, we will go far, but if we work with people will reach the stars. If you are stuck in a rut, find yourself a coach. Google it, use Instagram, have conversations and hire someone who connects with and someone who has helped others transform their lives too who were in the same position as you

  • I like having a coffee chat with my potential clients to see which program or service fits their needs best before we discuss pricing.
