Daily Inspiration: Meet Sheridan Collins and Amaya Damme of Obtaining Social

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheridan Collins and Amaya Damme. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Amaya Damme founded Obtaining Social in March of 2020 in hopes of breaking out of a male-dominated workforce and building an empire that empowers women to chase their dreams and build powerhouses of their own. At only 19 years old, Amaya decided to drop out of community college to chase her passion of elevating small businesses online.

Obtaining Social started as a small social media management company working with women-owned, small businesses around the USA. While starting her journey, Amaya began sharing her experience of building her social media management company with TikTok and quickly grew a fan base of over 70,000 followers within six months. Amaya encouraged young women to chase their dreams of also becoming social media managers themselves by sharing tips, tricks, the highs and lows, and being transparent with her followers.

After a few months, Amaya released her first course, the Hashtag Course, teaching fellow social media managers and small businesses how to utilize hashtags on Instagram effectively in hopes of reaching new audiences. The course was a huge success and is still featured as a staple course on the Obtaining Social website to this day.

Her fan base followed her to Instagram, where she began to share repostable, educational content about growing your own social media management business.

Amaya ran Obtaining Social solo until December 2020, when she branched out and brought on her first team of interns. At this time, Obtaining Social also was managing 5-6 social media accounts for fashion boutiques and spas around the USA in addition to teaching social media managers about starting their business.

Sheridan Collins was one of the two interns Amaya Damme brought on in December of 2020. Sheridan graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor of science in Tourism Development with a minor in Special Events Coordinating and Corporate Sales. She was heavily involved in her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega throughout college while also working as an event coordinator and manager for local boutiques in Scottsdale, Arizona. After college, she accepted a full-time job-based in Los Angeles, where she traveled the USA year-round coordinating festival events, large retreats, and special events for fraternities and sororities.

When COVID-19 hit, Sheridan was laid off from her traveling event coordinating career and was forced to find another path. She wanted to stick to her creative roots and continue to create memorable experiences for others. After much research and brainstorming, Sheridan found the Social Media Management and Influencer Management world. Event Coordinating and Social Media management is a similar dance. They both require prep work, creativity, problem-solving, and building of a vision, and watching it all unravel into a final, unforgettable product/experience. Coming to this realization, Sheridan found her true calling and reached out to Amaya, her long-time friend and prior co-worker, in hopes of learning more about running a social media management company.

Although Sheridan was hired to be an unpaid intern with Obtaining Social, she took on the business as her own and began building out the missing pieces of Obtaining Social. From the client management, CRM organization, outreach processes, email marketing tactics, brainstorming new ways to innovate Obtaining Social… Amaya and Sheridan found themselves to be the perfect business partner match.

Midway through the internship, Sheridan decided to start her own social media management company. She gained four clients within the first two weeks and began working tirelessly to please her new clients and also support Obtaining Social. By the end of her second month in business, she realized she needed help if she was going to continue bringing on new clients and scaling the business.

During the last month of her internship with Obtaining Social, Sheridan proposed the idea of merging companies with Amaya. Sheridan had years of experience in team management, sales, client relations, proposal pitching + writing, lead generation, and in-person event coordinating which translated perfectly to the places Obtaining Social was lacking.

In April 2021, Amaya and Sheridan agreed to merge their companies and became 51/49 Co-founders of Obtaining Social.

Sheridan was living in Portland, Oregon at this time. After agreeing to merge companies, Sheridan began planning out her move to Scottsdale, Arizona to work alongside Amaya and build out their Obtaining Social team.

From April-May, they worked day and night to re-brand Obtaining Social and build Obtaining Social into a Creative Marketing Agency. Let go of all their current clients, built out a new company vision together, perfected their business plan and strategies, scouted their first set of interns together, restructured their packages, zoned in on their ideal client, and launched their second course, Outreach Like A Boss.

In May of 2021, they brought on their first two clients after their merge and had grown their team to 10. They brought on a graphic design team, client relations team, social media management team and completely formed their Agency.

Since then, Sheridan and Amaya have zoned in on Content Creation Packages and Social Media Management. They continue to elevate women-owned, small businesses through their “Gen-Z and Millenial approach” to blowing up brands online. They’ve built their own influencer network, the Socialites, to over 3,000+ contacts, with who their clients get exclusive access to work.

They have dreams of creating viral-worthy content with hundreds of more brands, building out their Socialites Network into an exclusive influencer community, and continuing to blow up brands online for years to come.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
1. Overcoming ageism was a huge struggle for Amaya when starting Obtaining Social. Clients would not trust her judgment or strategies based on how young she was and how little time she had spent in the industry.

After bringing on Co-Founder Sheridan, being 24 years old, she was able to jump in and strategize new ways to present strategies to overcome this.

2. Another struggle Obtaining Social has experienced has been online growth expectations. Online fame is everyone’s dream, especially as a business. Unfortunately, online growth is a slow and steady game, much like anything else in life. Sometimes, businesses or clients do not understand that our strategy of organic engagement and organic growth is the most beneficial to their brand because the results do not show overnight. Buying followers, buying likes, running ads are all ways to BREAK your strategy and do not work in your favor long term when hoping to build an AUTHENTIC audience who will buy from you and become your true clients. Sometimes, this idea is hard for businesses to wrap their mind around and they end up becoming impatient, buy followers or likes, and their social accounts will become banned. They come back to us wondering what happened and why their reach tanked… moral of the story, set expectations with clients, let them know that if they do end up buying followers or bots, that our work and the money spent on their strategy goes down the drain… for months, or years, depending on the damage they did.
