Today we’d like to introduce you to Shari Johnson.
Hi Shari, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started practicing calligraphy years ago but I got serious about it when a friend asked me to write out the place cards for her wedding.
Then, when I was planning my own wedding I created each invitation by hand. I fell in love with the process of printing and using unique materials like handmade paper and I watercolor-painted each one.
While following more and more stationers on Instagram, I discovered letterpress. I took a class with a local print shop and from then I knew I wanted to purchase my own press and start a business creating beautiful invitations for others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
COVID definitely brought the wedding industry to its knees during the pandemic.
But thankfully, I was only designing on the side as a hobby at the time. Working from home gave me time to create a website and design a portfolio.
I was also able to find my press on eBay and I then officially started my LLC. I am excited that the industry is coming back in full force!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My business specializes in wedding stationery such as invitations, seating charts, and calligraphy hand addressing envelopes and place cards. But I also create any and all paper goods including baby showers, bar mitzvahs personalized cards and more.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I am so grateful to have my husband as my biggest cheerleader.
He always has been an amazing supporter of my art and my business goals. I am also so lucky to have the best friends and family who are always wonderful promoters of my work.
