Today we’d like to introduce you to Lutisha Goebel.
Hi Lutisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The dream of owning a coffee shop social house was born in my heart 26 years ago.
I spent the greater part of my career working in the medical profession counseling individuals through various medical conditions. I too lived with a medical condition that was incurable which positioned me to use my education and personal experience to provide patients with various avenues to live a quality of life with their condition. I was healed from my 30-year illness on January 13, 2019.
For 20 years, I partnered with my husband in ownership of an insurance brokerage firm only to have my husband file for divorce during the pandemic. This unexpected decision forced me out on my own, with little to no financial security to start my life over at age 50.
Although unexpected and extremely devastating to our family, this blessing in disguise allowed me to finally step in total faith to start my own business after years of walking alongside others in helping them reach their potential. In September of 2021, after a brief return to the medical field (due to the divorce), I was able to save (one-year savings) to launch Phoenix Strange Brew Coffee & Market in December 2021.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been an interesting ride! The challenge we have encountered in our signage. The graphics designer we hired to make our sign captured the business logo on a black sign.
Customers have struggled to find us due to the black sign. We have actually made a joke out of it by telling our customers “To look for the black sign, yes we know it is not the best sign and does not make any sense, but we are serving Phoenix, Strange Brew.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Recipes collected and tested over the last 26 years. We specialize in (scratch) handcrafted recipes.
Our love is in the art of beverage mixology. Our sauces and syrups are Vegan, Nondairy, and Gluten-free and our beans are from an all-women village in La Pas, Honduras. With the help of our roaster, Cult Artisan, this bean was selected specifically for us to ensure that we have a low acid espresso to provide our customers full flavor in our scratch recipes. Sugar-free options are also available to our customers.
When we are not mixing up strange coffee concoctions, we are creating recipes for our loose leaf tea beverages, twisted lemonades, smoothies, and shakes. We direct our customers to social media to capture our “Secret Menu”. This has increased our following significantly! We take pride in providing customers with a “free of Debris” beverage. We like to share our skills for mixology when preparing teas, lemonades, smoothies, and shakes.
Our pastries, desserts, cakes (Vegan, GF options available), and charcuterie boxes are created by local artisans to help promote their gifts. We are two businesses under one roof! My business partner is an interior designer who is currently working out in the field of remodeling and creating in customers’ homes and businesses. We partner with local artisans such as Ties to Ghana for a hand-woven basket, and Iris Clothing Company for apparel.
BluCreek Blvd/Cactus AZ for unique key chains, air fresheners, and wood-framed art. Willa Market provides non-toxic handmade soaps, home decor, and specialty items for sale. We are looking for additional vendors to aid in helping their business grow. What sets us apart from other coffee shop markets is our entire vibe – aesthetically pleasing decor and layout – it is truly a social house.
We have thought of every detail to ensure that it is the perfect place to sit and enjoy food and beverage with friends, have a business meeting, change of scenery for homeschool families, wedding receptions, birthday parties, etc.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Jesus! Our faith in Christ is evident. We serve our customers by modeling the character of Jesus. We treat each person (believer or non-believer) with care and concern.
We practice serving our customers to ensure that their experience with us far exceeds their expectations. We believe that when we focus on serving, the business (financial part) is taken care of. We do not shy away from praying with our customers or placing their names on our prayer wall.
We love at all times, make sure we know our guests’ names and what their favorites are and that shows each guest that we care about them and their families. People feel at home and it is a place of refuge for the community we serve.
