Conversations with Teniecka Drake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teniecka Drake.

Hi Teniecka, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started Podcasting four years ago back in 2018. I had always wanted to either sing or be on the radio. When I discovered I was able to create my own podcast. I was super thrilled and ecstatic about this new opportunity for me. The podcast is titled “God’s Gift Through His Word” and there is a second titled ” LAFF, INC”. A little back story on the first one. It was for me to express my Faith at the same time address Domestic Violence and Abuse.

Being a survivor, overcomes, and thrivers on that type of abuse. It was imperative that I share my experience. While providing scripture and prayer, inspiration is also offered. I have been through a lot of different trauma from my childhood too, including MST (Military Sexual Trauma) from the Air Force. During the creation of my podcast, I wrote a book called, ” The Gift of Finding God’s Love: Guilt and Shame Turned Into My Shine”.

In the book, I shared about the abusive marriage that I was in. I had to leave my job and friends everything in Arizona to go live in California for the Safety of my children. Doing my podcast helped me to share and be open and vulnerable. At times emotional but, all of this to encourage others going through hard challenges. In this podcast, I even found myself interviewing independent artists. From the book, the podcast was birthed and from the podcast the SoCal Podcast Explosion. That was an event hosted by myself and Sponsored by Walk in Truth Christian Fellowship Church. Dr. James Sutton, II, Senior Pastor, and fellow podcaster helped me to create this event.

Do we hope to host another podcasting event perhaps in Phoenix this time? The second podcast called LAFF, INC shared resources for southern California. It also offered musings and heart shares. This one was connected to a non-profit called LAFF, INC( Loving Arms For Families, Inc). Creating a non-profit is a lot of work and hard. The non-profit work was going to help Veterans that had been touched by domestic violence, had children on the Spectrum, and offered HIV+ education and prevention assistance. I am a Disabled Air Force Veteran and all those areas are my pain points.

These are not addressed by the VA altogether and rarely is the family considered. I definitely have spoken at different events speaking about these challenges. Being another o four amazing children I wanted to make sure I am doing something to help. Right now, I have placed the non-profit on hold. It takes a lot of people to support and see the vision. I will keep running for my dreams and never give up. I truly love creating, doing, and being part of events. I do plan to do more writing and am extremely excited for my book to be in audio form coming soon.

I also love teaching new people about podcasting who are just starting and want to share their faith. And Dr. Sutton, II does a special course for those interested in getting started in podcasting. I look forward to making new connections in Arizona. I cannot wait to embark upon this new chapter of my life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Before I started my podcast, I had experienced homelessness twice. I was living in transitional housing. Having left two children with family and the other two at the transitional facility with me. It was extremely rough and curfews and being watched like I was a criminal. It was one of the struggles I passed through. Then having to lose housing a second time due to a Landlord wanting more money.

During the pandemic going to jail for calling the Veterans Crisis line during a Global Crisis. I was handcuffed my kids were put into the system in Foster care in California. I was not able to get them back for about five months. Still having to deal with the ex-husband because the State reached out to him. After the courts painted me as a bad mother. They found out quickly why I had kept the children away from him. The ex-husband threatened my life again.

That was when the court issued its own restraining order. There were times even my own family would not help me. I had been dealing with being given a psychiatric mental condition due to being Raped in the military. For 22 years, I was labeled Bipolar and it was not until earlier this year the VA dropped the medication from me. That hurt me because my own Mother and Father put me in Psychiatric facilities in 2001, 2002, and again in 2020 (VA hospital in Long Beach). My mother had used the funds that were for me from the VA for her.

I had an attorney that said the things she did were wrong. I will never be able to fix 22 years of my life that were stolen for financial gain. Yet, all my old bills were never paid even though she had access to the funds to pay them. I am saddened I thought I would be able to get my own home 22 years ago. My mother has never supported me. Even my Dad I thought they were on my side. My mother told me to take a job in Arizona. Leave my kids with her and do not get an apartment.

Then take a shower at a gas station. Well, that would make me look like an unstable Veteran to VA. I had to run away from my family my ex and California. I have been running for a long time. These are just a few of the challenges I have faced along my journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Extremely proud of the God’s Gift Through His Word TV Show. Which can be found on the promote her app. You can watch those episodes and see some of my fellow podcasters on Roku TV!!!!!!!!!! I am a content creator and I am extremely proud of my book, podcast, and the event that I did.

What sets me apart from others is the lens through which I see things. I have been hurt but, I look to inspire others to the best of my ability. I can only hope I can “Be the Change I want to see in the World.” (Mahatma Gandhi). I truly specialize in helping people and people of Faith use their voices. By sharing what they love or their own challenges they can help someone else. I naturally coach and mentor people in that way. I also help those that want to go through life feel empowered and embrace it.

I try to do my best to provide platforms for others to shine. If it is not on the podcast. Then clubhouse on the Podcast Connect Network Club. If not there is the Monday Morning Convo live show with myself and Dr.Sutton, II. I want to help others to shine bright and also be known for what they do and what they offer as well. Look forward to connecting with others to be part of our Network.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was during summertime. That was the time we (my siblings) and I had to get out of the house. We had to find somewhere to go. I would always walk down to my friend’s house and hang out there all day and get home before the street lights came on.
