Conversations with Mari Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Thompson.

Mari, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Synchronicity and knowing when to lean in and knowing when to coast. I am a single mother of three boys, Smith, 6, Ford, 4, and Bo, 2. Hairstylist since 2009, with lots of geographical changes, getting sober, living sober, family life, and the drive to be fully self-expressed. I love my life! Daisy girl is my rescue dog that came into my life during so many unknowns and made it sweet. She’s our shop dog and has her couch and naps beautifully for all to see. I’ve been blessed with incredible friendships in the industry, and when the opportunity to acquire the shop was presented to me by owner Randee, a long-time co-worker and pal, I said yes! Excitement, fear, intuition, and lots of community allowed for the ownership change, new beginnings with fresh paint, and tons of ideas that continue to manifest with hard work and trust. It’s a joy to design and create in a natural, open, and energetic space. Having worked with Randee for a year in the space, I had an idea of how I’d like to play with function and vibe, and that’s just what I’ve done. We are a collective of artists that live for our passions to be realized, and I hold space for that to happen as the owner and stylist myself. We are a 4 chair operation with part-time and full-time chair rental opportunities. You walk in and feel good, inspired, and ready to unwind and exhale while becoming more of who you are in the mirror. That’s our space, and we don’t have rules. Please keep it simple; water the plants, be kind, clean up after yourself and thrive!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This one could be difficult to answer if not told out loud with a good sense of humor. The Internet provider we use alone took six weeks to transfer to the new company. Two steps forward, four steps back when it comes to buying, changing ownership, and reinventing a business initially not made for profit. Struggle and challenge is a pivotal piece to accept and persevere because, on the other side, I learn more about myself, why my dreams are worth being uncomfortable for, and that truly anything is possible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I guess what I’m most proud of would have to be the ability to connect with many different types of people and bring ease and comfort in the form of beauty. I love to enhance what’s working while recommending lengths and tones that will bring out the best in you! I show up as myself fully every day, and I can connect with my clients on a level that keeps me coming to work every day.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Anything can and does happen! We are an amazing shop that creates space for anyone to be able to walk in and feel grounded and alive. I look forward to meeting new artists and creatives who want to share our space and grow this company as a platform for independent artists to feel confident in their business and process.
