Conversations with Margaret Elizondo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Elizondo.

Hi Margaret, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Margaret Elizondo, part owner of Cactus Flower Day Spa. I was born and raised in Billings, Montana. I am Mexican American and very proud to say I was raised by my mother, from Montana and my Father, who is an immigrant from Mexico. I have 5 siblings. 2 sisters and 3 brothers. My dad is my biggest hero. He has always inspired myself and my siblings to work hard and never give up. We all know that nothing is ever handed over to you. You have to work hard to get where you want to be in life.
I married my husband at the age of 17, which is very young. We have been married since October of 1997 and we have 5 amazing children. My husband is an immigrant from Mexico. We both were very much aware that getting married at such a young age was going to be challenging. I was a junior in high school when we got married. Knowing I had 2 more years left of high school and my husband working out of town majority of the time, I still managed to graduate in 1999, be a mom of 2 young boys, and still be a wife and maintain my household. It was not easy but my husband and I made it work. In 2000 I then had my daughter. I knew that I needed to start making some serious decisions. Due to my husband being very limited to jobs because of his language barrier, I knew I could not continue making minimum wage forever. So I decided to go to school and get licensed for Aesthetician and Nail technician in 2002. Then in 2013 we adopted our 2 younger daughters. Living in Billings was very hard for us to grow and very hard to make a good living. That is when we decided to move. We sold our house and moved all of us to Phoenix in July of 2016.

Here is a little background about my success story. I have been in the industry since 2002. In Billings I worked for a Spa for 5 years and I also started doing a little side hustle. I started selling Quinceanera dresses. This was my way of making my dream become a reality. I always dreamed of opening up my own Spa one day. I knew that I was going to have to work hard. I then decided to find a little spot to rent and that is when I became my own boss. From 2007 up to 2016 I worked as my own boss (self-employed)doing nails and skin treatments.
I knew in 2016 that if I moved it would be a restart of what I already built. But I was ready for change not just for myself but for my husband and kids. In 2016 when we moved here to Phoenix, I decided that I would go take a class and get my license for Laser Technician and Laser safety Officer. After I completed the class, I worked for a couple of companies before I had an opportunity in 2018 to work under a Doctor using my Laser and Aesthetician license. At that point, I needed to set a goal. I decided to work under the doctor for at least 5 years and after the 5 years I needed to be ready to make my dream become reality. While I was working at the doctor’s office I was promoted very quickly to Manager for his clinic. I then decided I would learn all the ends and outs of a med spa. I then reached out to many people and took some small classes so I would be ready for when it was time for my dream to become a reality. As time went on I knew I needed more help and that is when I hired Priscilla. She has been a licensed Aesthetician since 2014. We have known each other for about 4 years. Priscilla and myself bonded very quickly. After working a couple years under the Doctor, Priscilla and myself started talking about opening our own Spa one day. Soon after that is when the Pandemic happened. So I then decided I would start another side hustle by selling life insurance and Wax Candles. In May of 2022, exactly 5 years working at the clinic I was approached with the opportunity of this office space that was available. It was perfect for Priscilla and myself to get started on our dream. This is when we decided we would partner up and make our dream come true. We now are proud owners of Cactus Flower Day Spa.
Here is a little about Priscilla’s story:
I am Priscilla Rocha, I am part owner of Cactus Flower Day Spa. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Hence the name of the spa. I love all the things about Arizona. I come from immigrant parents, who wanted to give me a better life here in Arizona. I am Mexican American and very proud to be Latina. I watched my parents make a living to provide for a family of 5. I had a great example growing up of a strong independent mother who herself is a business owner.. I became a business owner with my partner Margaret Elizondo. We met about 4 years ago, working under a doctor at a small med spa in south central Phoenix. I have been licensed as an Aesthetician since 2014. While working at the med spa, Margaret pushed me to get my laser license and continue my education for the future. Now I can say I not only have dual licenses but I am also a Laser Safety Officer. While working with Margaret, we bonded about our upbringing , views and we both share the same passion for this business. We always talked about how it would be a dream to open our spa one day here in Phoenix. We never thought our dream would come true, and we would finally open our spa. We just did that and opened Cactus Flower Day Spa. Now we can say we are proud business owners.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Opening a business is never a smooth road, especially during a pandemic. We originally planned to open our business within 2 to 3 months. But that idea ended up taking a left turn. Unfortunately the clinic we were working at decided it was time to close their doors. We then needed to use our entire savings into our business, hoping and praying our new adventure would flourish. Our main struggle was that we just did not have enough time to plan out our opening. We worked very hard and with all the help and support from all our family’s and our loyal clients, we were able to accomplish what we originally planned. Even though we have been open for such a short time, we have NO regrets and are very happy how everything has turned out.
” When one door closes, another blessing opens.”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in changing our clients lives. In many cases, clients think that skin care can be too costly and unobtainable. Our job is to show and help our clients achieve their goals for skin care and on their budget. Many clients do not realize how much of a benefit this can be for them, and we love helping and showing them how to maintain and the easiest way to reach the skin care goals.
We provide a variety of facials, Microneedling, Chemical Peels, and Laser treatments. Such as Photofacials (IPL), Laser Hair Removal, Tattoo Removal and Black China Doll. We also provide intimate area facials. The intimate facials is one of the newest professional trends in facials.

Our bond with all our clients is what keeps us continuing with our passion for skin. The main thing that sets us apart from anyone else is that we treat our clients as our family and we make sure they are taken care of just the way we would expect to be treated. Most of our clients have expressed that we are not just a technician to them, we are family. We both feel the same towards all of our clients.
