Conversations with Keili Summey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keili Summey.

Hi Keili, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story is inspired by my amazing Grandma, KC.

For my wedding in 2018, my best friend Alex and I designed all of the floral arrangements thanks to our background in The National FFA Organization but it wasn’t until my grandmother’s passing in Fall 2020 that I felt a big tug on my heart to open this business. It’s an absolute honor to spread joy through flowers to each of you and carry Grandma KC with me through all of it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My mentality from the beginning was always “throw everything on the wall and see what sticks”. With a new business, the sky was limitless so we tried several new innovative ideas like hosting kids birthday parties, summer camp, DIY classes, etc. We even had so much growth that I opened a retail location in February, but that was too difficult to manage with weddings on the weekends and other events during the week. So we decided to step away from the retail location and focus on online orders and events mainly. We wanted to “fail fast” to figure out what our niche market is and I am proud to say after just one year since opening, we know our ideal clientele and niche business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in wedding/ event work that incorporates desert themes, and organic wildflower aesthetics. We are known for being inclusive to all and strive to be as welcoming as possible. I truly love weddings and enjoy getting to know each of our couples love stories. I get almost as excited as them for their big days! I am most proud of the team that we have at KC’s Floral Designs. We have a family work environment and I honestly couldn’t imagine going through all of the stressful times with anyone else. They’ve left me encouraging notes and picked up extra hours at the last minute to help out and always go above and beyond.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have to thank all of my family for supporting this big dream of mine and for encouraging me along the way. They’ve also stepped up to help with deliveries and process flowers. I would also like to thank the Laveen community for stepping up and supporting small businesses. I’ve met so many amazing business owners in Laveen and truly formed such a connection with our customers and I truly owe this success to them.
