Conversations with Jacquie Dudo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Basham and Jacquie Dudo with Capture the Moment Rentals.

Hi Jacquie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Judy said, what if there was a business where you could rent the props needed for your photos, either as parents taking cute photos of your children each season or as a photographer doing mini-sessions. You spend tons of time searching for the items, money on buying all the props, and after, you have to figure out where to store all of it or try and resell or toss in the trash. This is a way to save others time, money, and the environment. I said, as a parent, I love that idea! I’m in; let’s do it! So we started our LLC and began taking photos of our props and networking to get our name out there. Some people are dreamers, and some people are doers. We are the doers.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been rough since we are starting in the summer when many families don’t take photos. We are hopeful that things will pick up in the fall with our props being rented by photographers doing their fall and winter sessions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are proud to say we are an original company. While there are plenty of rental companies out there, there don’t seem to be any that rent props to photographers or families looking to capture those special moments while their children are young. We are doing our part to help reduce waste by recycling and reusing items rather than people purchasing new ones. We both have our Masters’s degrees in Early Childhood Education, so we know how to work with young children.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Things in life are going to have risks associated with them. We believe that you need to determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks. We feel this is an untapped market, and it is worth the risk to start this business out of our pockets. As teachers, we do not have a lot of extra income, but we are using every cent to invest in new props to be able to offer others. We hope that, in time, this risk will pay off. In the meantime, we are enjoying the ride and our new pastime.
