Conversations with Hannah McKernan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah McKernan.

Hi Hannah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always had a passion for design. When I graduated college, I knew I wanted to be in the housing industry, but I wasn’t sure in what capacity. I graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Design and started working in the housing industry immediately after. I first started as a designer in a flagship store for a locally created home furnishing company where I interned in college. From there, I became a designer for a home builder helping over 50 local homeowners build their dream homes, customize blueprints, design dream kitchens and pick out finishes. But I shortly realized that the only way to become the best version of myself in my career was to start a company on my own. In October 2019, I started a home renovation company, M & R Reno and Rehab, LLC, with my business partner, Justin Remick, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. I continued to wait tables in the evening so we could build the business. Since then, we have flipped and designed 5 houses in our local community. Shortly after, I added an Interior Design company to service private clients. I designed multiple houses for local clients and The Hive, a hair salon in Hudson, Ohio, from rough plans through final construction. Between working on designs for the hair salon, our local remodels, and private clients, my career launched into what it is today. Not only is our renovation company thriving, but I also find myself working my dream job as the Senior Interior Designer for Resort Style Vacation Homes. Resort Style Vacation Homes has become a leading vacation rental company featuring luxury homes with outstanding amenities for their guests. We are working on various projects throughout Scottsdale, Sedona, and other parts of Arizona, California, Vermont, and Ohio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
The most challenging part of my career was leaving my full-time job with a guaranteed paycheck for a dream with risks. Although I worked extensively with plans and clients, I had never entered the world of flipping alone. Fortunately, I had willing investors that were confident in my abilities. I gained confidence in my business and myself as a designer. My risks turned into something I could be proud of, and I never looked back.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Throughout my career, I was able to evolve as a designer that can design anywhere, in any market for any client. I have designed houses for people looking for starter homes to multi-million dollar estates. I never wanted to be a “cookie-cutter” designer, especially regarding people’s first homes. I always wanted to give someone something unique, no matter the size or budget, and I have never been afraid to push the limit. I look back at the decisions I have made and realize that the proudest moment I have had in my career had the guts to take risks, even though I had no idea if it was even going to be successful.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Trends and people’s tastes are constantly changing, and they will always continue to do so, creating demand for Interior Design. The Resort Industry is also continuously evolving; people are always looking for better amenities and places to spend time with their families, and we give guests a luxury space to do that. I continue to research market trends and styles; I always want to be one step ahead so I can continue to give clients & guests a space they never want to leave.
